Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an adventure game steeped in the American atmosphere and using many elements from its culture and folklore. During his journey, the traveler must listen to various tales and pass them on to all the characters he meets. The people he encounters come from various communities, ranging from European immigrants, through black slaves from the south, to the native inhabitants of the continent. The stories, on the other hand, are based on the novels of Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and John Steinbeck. You can also hear soundtrack composed of blues and folk music and this soundtrack is truly extraordinary.

The Gameplay

Each trip the main character goes onto is different in style. The player travels once as a tramp, and sometimes the action is a bit more on the romantic side. Often, the hero must watch the tragedy of people who were forced to leave their homes. The player has the ability to move freely, without having to fight or solve puzzles. He is moving around the big world, which consists of all the states of the USA.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine begins when the main character loses in a card game when playing against a wolf. The hero turns into a skeleton and begins a lonely journey through the United States of the last century. He wanders between different buildings, villages, and cities. Sometimes he is a witness to an event, and sometimes he has to listen to a story. Thanks to this, he gains the trust of a dozen or so wanderers, with whom he will enter into various relations.

These wanderers are different. They could be a war veteran or a Native Americans who escaped from an Indian reservation. The player meets them at bonfires. To make the time pass by more quickly, they ask the main character to tell different stories about topics chosen by them. These can be stories about ghosts or about alcoholism, but also about escape from home, war, separation, love, travel or hard work. Most often, they are short, sad and thought-provoking, although there are also those that sound very optimistic. The main character moves quite slowly on the map, and the longer he goes, the more often the hero can hear his own stories again, but they are already quite changed.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine – the Trailer Song Lyrics

If you want to hum the song Heavy Hands, which you can listen to in the game trailer, here are the lyrics. The soundtrack from the game can also be downloaded in digital form from GOG.com. You will get all the 30 songs in FLAC and MP3 formats.

If I turn my eyes
From these cold blue skies
Won’t stay my worry
Won’t calm or quell

I can say my piece
I can barter my tale
Won’t ease my burden
But I might as well

There’s a Heavy Hand
Laid across this land
And it steers my journey
And it guides my pen

Press on, head high
‘Til the ink has run dry
‘Cause my story ain’t like
To wind home again

The Game Developers

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine has been developed by Dim Bulb Games studio (in cooperation with Serenity Forge). The studio has been founded by Johnnemann Nordhagen (who has also worked on the famous BioShock, and on the adventure game Gone Home), and Kellan Jett. The game, on the day of its release, was available only on PCs. At this time nothing has been known about the versions for other platforms, including Xbox One or PS4 consoles.

An Unusual Adventure

Where The Water Tastes Like Wine is an unusual adventure game. But if you look into it, the game contains, after all, the three basic characteristic elements of adventure games. These are exploration, solving puzzles and a great plot. What makes the production of Dim Bulb Games extraordinary is the fact that instead of items the player collects stories and uses them to solve puzzles. This way you move the story forward and you can enjoy listening to more stories and tales told by the bonfires. We have probably mentioned it once or twice but this game has a great soundtrack. And a great atmosphere.
