The Story in the Film

The main character of the film is Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender). He is kidnapped by the Order of the Templars, who have been searching for centuries for the mighty artifact called Eden Apple. The Templars want to rule the whole world, but for that end, they have to claim the artifact. The reason is simple – Eden Apple has the capacity to stifle the free will in people. To protect the artifact specially trained defenders were called upon – the assassins.

Callum Lynch becomes the link between the present and the 15th century. It happens so because of the machine which was conceived and created by the Templars. It makes it possible to go back in time using human memories and genetic material. Callum remains the key to the discovery of the disappearance of Apple’s Eden. By connecting him to the machine, the Templars want to tap upon the memories of his ancestor Aguilar. It was Aguilar who was the last living assassin In Spain of the 15th century.

A Spectacular Picture

The actor Michael Fassbender in an ancient costume makes spectacular jumps on the rooftops and is on the quest to eliminate his opponents. Its main foe Rikkin (Jeremy Irons) silently watches the progress made by Callum on the machine. The main female character of the movie, Sofia (Marion Cotillard), behaves very similarly. Her main task is to observe Callum. Brendan Gleeson, Michael K. Williams, and Ariane Labed are the remaining key stars of the film.

The film shows the brutality and double-dealing of the Templars. On the other hand, the dedication and sacrifice of the Assassins in defense of the artifact have been also shown in a convincing way.

The film director had a difficult task to show a long history of the Assassins depicted in the computer games series. While making the film he made a few significant changes. One of them was the look of the Animus. The machine that was the key to unlocking the memories of the ancestors doesn’t appear in the form of a chair as it did in the computer games. It was designed as a mechanical arm capable of lifting a man into the air.

In the film, we can see the characteristic “jumps of faith”, which we have seen so often in the games – he jumps from incredible heights. In the movie, we can observe a jump from 38 meters performed by the stuntman Damien Walters.

One of the strengths of this film is the music created by the brother of director Jed Kurzel.
