RTS Games

RTS games, or real-time strategy games, are a subgenre of strategy games initiated by Dune II in the early 90s, although a decade earlier, the games of this type were already shaping. Here, we mean such titles as Utopia (1981) or Cytron Masters titles (1982).

Real-time strategies give the players three goals: gathering resources, building a base and army, and destroying the enemy. Typically, you start the game with a small number of resources. Then you collect resources and gain levels of development which allows you to amass an increasingly stronger army. In some games, it is equally important to counteract the development of the enemy base, take over its resources, destroy the and basically react to whatever your opponent does.

RTS games evolved from simple 2D games, in which the player controlled a small number of units, to extremely complex 3D games, with vast worlds and battlefields in which dozens of infrastructure buildings and hundreds of army units remain under the leadership of the player.

A characteristic element of modern RTS games is the bird’s eye view of the game world (in 3D or in an isometric perspective). You control the game, and your units on the battlefield, mainly with a mouse, while the keyboard has auxiliary functions. Skirmishes and battles require advanced reflexes. At the same time, the expansion and improvement of the base or camp usually take place at a slightly slower pace. RTS games are often played by e-sport masters and veterans. The pace with which the best players act is counted in actions per minute (APM). Professional e-sports athletes have an average of 300 APM which is far beyond the reach of mere mortals.

In RTS games victory game depends on many factors. The player must make strategic economic decisions, and sometimes also diplomatic calls that affect the future of his army. He should also plan his actions for minutes and even hours ahead. Different titles put a different emphasis on the above-mentioned elements, but typical RTS games should include all of them to some extent. At the same time, there are many games on the market that enrich the gameplay with the ability to control units from the first-person perspective just line in the action first-person shooters.
