Gloomhaven

Gloomhaven-08

I have to admit that I am coming into Gloomhaven kind of ignorant. I thought this looked like a cool dungeon crawler-style RPG, but I would then learn it is based on a very popular tabletop game. It ...

Yakuza-Like-a-Dragon-002

As I am a massive fan of the series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a game I have had quite an interest in. This is a bit of a departure for the long-running series and in all honesty, it is a breath of ...

Baldur’s Gate III

Editor's choice Baldur’s-Gate-III-03

SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays

SD Gundam_G_Generation_Cross_Rays-2

Gundam is to anime as bread is to a sandwich. And while the two often remind one of the other, that doesn’t mean that the video games are equally iconic. Often games based on anime properties like ...

XCOM: Chimera Squad

XCOM_Chimera_Squad-7

I freaking loved the first two XCOM games and I am someone who struggles with strategy games usually. XCOM: Chimera Squad is a sequel, but it feels more like a side game than a full-on sequel if that ...

In turn-based games the whole gameplay or part of it is played in such a way that one player moves first, followed by another. Examples of a situation where the whole game is turn-based are strategy games from the Civilization series. Examples of a partially turn-based gameplay – many RPG games, such as Fallout, where the fights are turn-based, while an individual or a party of adventurers move on the map in real time. Another game, in which only part of the game is played in turns is the famous Total War series – the strategic planning on the map is a turn-based game, and the fight is a classic RTS.

During his turn, one player (and only him) can move units, improve fortifications or perform battle maneuvers. In turn-based games, every turn you have a certain number of action points to spend. The games which you play in turns are very similar to strategy board games. In contrast to the real-time strategy, turn-based games allow the player to think about the next move for a longer time.

A classic turn-based strategy game is Heroes of the Might & Magic (1995). This is a title that virtually everyone knows. In the game, you play as a hero who explores the magic world, fighting with various groups of monsters with other creatures as his allies. You have our own castle at our disposal, to which you must often return to fill the gaps in your army. You can expand the fortress and hire progressively stronger units.

It is also worth to mention Age of Wonders (1999), another acclaimed turn-based game. In AoW, you choose a side in a conflict between the Empire and the Elven Court. The gameplay is an exploration of the map, clashes of heroes and exciting battles.

Turn-based games are aimed at people who like to analyze and choose strategic solutions that will have an impact on future stages of the play.
