Just Dance 2019 Review

Part of the long-running series from Ubisoft, Just Dance is, as the name implies, a dancing simulator. Filled with a playlist of popular music from today’s chart-topping artists, Just Dance 2019 is, as you would expect, high quality and a bit redundant. If you’ve played the other games, you’ve experienced this one as well. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a good game. It’s just a bit of a retread.

Like Konami’s arcade sensation Dance Dance Revolution, the game rewards you for mimicking the movements on screen and lets you rack up points while doing it. Basically an arcade game with a musical theme, Just Dance 2019 is really aerobic and active.

The Graphics

The graphics can best be described as a kind of screensaver on steroids. Bright colors, flashing lights, all pulsing to a beat, combine to make for a presentation that doesn’t want you to focus on it too hard. Since you’ll be dancing, you probably won’t really care about the graphics but they are a little much at times. You could probably describe as a mix between an EDM club and an arcade – just without the smoke and stink.

The Music

Where Just Dance 2019 stands out is in its selection of music. It comes with a great tracklist already. But if you combine it with Just Dance Unlimited, Ubisoft’s streaming service for the game, you’ll have an almost unlimited number of tracks to choose from in game.

The Bottom Line

The extent to which this game is fun for you largely rests on how much you like music. If you’re a huge fan of popular tracks and want to dance your heart out, then this title has the right formula to keep you entertained for hours on end. It is the rest of us that I worry about.

Because, after a while, Just Dance 2019 becomes more of a novelty than a video game. Like Settlers of Catan or Jenga, it becomes something you do on special occasions with friends. And we don’t know that this thing alone justifies its purchase for most people. There is no doubt a huge community devoted to this game. But those people love it for its physicality and its use of music – there are no speedrunners of Just Dance titles. Just something to keep in mind.
