The Game Review: A Refreshing Re-emergence
Addictive, fun and rewarding, this is a game that still has a place in our hearts fourteen years after its initial release. Sure, it’s not without its drawbacks, but who can ever remember feeling this good by gathering up junk. That said, this classic safely avoids the scrapheap for all time.
Katamari Damacy Reroll is one of those games that you may well overlook, but despite the absurdity of it all, this is a shiny diamond in the rough, or as it were, a gem in the trash-heap. Judging a book by its cover would be a mistake in this case. However, those who give this roll-em up a chance will be pleasantly surprised and charmed by its mystical feel, and addictive properties.
It’s hard to pinpoint just what it is that makes this game such a blast to play, but as you drag the cursor back and forth and combine all that random clutter bit-by-bit, a soothing sense of satisfaction takes hold. The objective is a simple one, to restore the stars to their former glory.
The hap-hazard king of the skies has wreaked havoc across the cosmos and broken all the stars in the universe. It is your job as a plucky Prince to seize the day, and mend any wrongful deeds of the overlord. That may all sound a little farfetched, and it is, but the strange premise is all part of the fun.
Mainly though, there is a cathartic feel about Katamari Damacy Reroll, and it’s pacing is perfect for those that wish to lift their mood or spirits. Meshing together odds and ends, and rolling up bit’s and pieces is for some reason, very relaxing, it has its therapeutic properties. Especially true, when the objects get bigger and the mass collected becomes an unstoppable ball of bin-bag goods.
On the other hand, there are a few minor gripes that come with all the pulse-racing drag and drop antics. Firstly, the lack of a save feature comes as a bit of a shock for a remake. Also, the game plays in a locked windowed frame. However, this can change once the tutorial is done and dusted. Albeit, picking up on these points is just nitpicking.
All in all, Katamari Damacy Reroll is a rare, roll-em up gem that succeeds in conjuring a sense of fun, from the rather menial task of collecting clutter. It’s quite an achievement. Visually, it does show its age to a degree, but this doesn’t change the appealing nature and vibrant inventiveness of its contents.
