Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

Alrighty then, it is time for another Jim Carrey 90s classic as we look at Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. This is the sequel to the huge 1994 hit, Ace Venture: Pet Detective. To say that Jim Carrey was a huge deal in the mid to late 90s is a massive understatement. It is impressive that they managed to get this out so quickly. I tell you, in 1994 and 1995 it felt like Jim Carrey was everywhere!

The Movie Review

Ace Ventura’s Wild Sequel

The funny thing about Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is that before I watched it again for this review, I could not have told you what the main plot of the movie was. However, I could have rattled off several hilarious moments from the movie as there are so many memorable parts where Jim Carrey does what Jim Carrey did best in the 90s and that is crazy over the top slapstick style comedy.

From him trying to find himself at the monastery to him driving through the jungle yelling the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song, Ace is freaking nuts and that is what we all love about him. Another great scene in the movie is where he has to try and earn a tribe’s respect by competing in a whole bunch of challenges and rituals.

The Wild Plot of Ace Ventura

That brings me to the actual plot of Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. There are two tribes that are about to be bound thanks to a wedding, however, a very rare bat has been stolen and Ace is needed to try and locate the bat. This is important for a few different reasons. First of all, one of the tribes is going to wipe out the other tribe and also kill Ace if he does not! Secondly, adding a tiny bit more depth to this is the fact that despite being the “pet detective” Ace is terrified of bats!

Jim Carrey’s Over-The-Top Comedy

If I am being honest as much as I love Jim Carrey and as much as some of the scenes in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls make me laugh, I do not feel this movie is as good as the first one. I am not saying this is bad and if you like Pet Detective, you will like this as it has more of the same brand of crazy Jim Carrey humor.

The thing is, I feel that while Pet Detective had a lot of humor and crazy stuff going on. The “detective caper” stuff in Pet Detective as well as the big twist (and it was a big twist that the police chief had if you know what I am saying!) were better than what is on offer here. The main plot is not horrible and it certainly sets up all of the crazy Ace Ventura antics very well I just feel that they did better with the detective stuff in that first movie.

Is Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls Worth Watching?

Jim Carrey is one of those actors that people tend to love or hate and if you are not a Jim Carrey fan, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is going to be a nightmare for you to sit through. For me, I like this movie, it would not crack my Jim Carrey top 5, but it still has some very funny moments.
