American Wedding

When the first American Pie movie came out in 1999, I was 17 years old, the perfect age for a raunchy comedy like that. At the time, I loved American Pie and I thought the sequel was nearly as good so I was well and truly up for a third outing with the guys and girls. American Wedding is a good and funny movie. It sounds obvious, but if you liked the first two, you will like this.

The Movie Review

Missing Cast Members

They were not able to get all of the cast back for this third outing, Chris Klien’s Oz, Tara Reid’s Vicky, Mena Suvari’s Heather, and Shannon Elizabeth’s Nadia being the most notable cast members missing. However, once the movie starts, I do not actually think you notice that these characters are missing. Sure it would have been great if they were here, but I do not think the story suffers at all.

A Rocky Proposal

No longer in high school, Jim is serious about settling down and he is going to propose to Michelle. Of course, in typical American Pie fashion, things do not go smoothly and Michelle thinks Jim is trying to get something else going and she heads under the table if you know what I am saying. American Wedding starts off pretty much perfectly and sets the tone for the kind of humor you can expect for the next 90 or so minutes.

Wedding Chaos

The movie is about Jim and Michelle’s wedding. Jim decides that he does not want Stiffler involved as he is more trouble than he is worth. However, Stiffler can teach Jim to dance so Jim agrees to let him be part of the wedding party. As you would expect, nothing goes smoothly!

Memorable Moments

American Wedding has some of the series’ major highlights and most memorable moments. Stiffler having a dance-off in the gay bar has me in stitches every time. However, it is the bachelor party scene that has me laughing like a maniac, even though I know exactly what is going to happen. Stiffler organizes a surprise bachelor party, complete with strippers the same night Jim is having a fancy dinner at the house for Michelle’s parents, you know, this may be my favorite scene in the entire American Pie saga now that I think about it.

Character Chemistry

While there are many gross-out comedy moments in American Wedding. A huge part of the reason that this series lasted as long as it did and why it is as well remembered as it is, is because of the characters. The characters are what make this series and Jim, Kevin, Finch, and Stiffler are so much fun together and they are believable as a friend group as well. The back and forth with Finch and Stiffler and Jim and Kevin playing the more straight kind of normal guys all works really well.

Final Thoughts

I know that a lot of people do not remember American Wedding as fondly as the first two American Pie movies, but I honestly do not think there is much in it. I think that all three are hilarious movies and you know what, I actually think I do slightly prefer this over American Pie 2. If you are in the mood for some laughs, you cannot go wrong with American Wedding.
