Attack on Titan

I will admit that I was late to the party with Attack on Titan. I actually played the 2016 Attack on Titan video game before I saw a single episode of the TV show and I loved it. That was what made me finally want to check out the show. Thankfully, all four seasons were on Netflix so I was able to plow my way through the show and I thought that it was fantastic.

The Movie Review

Before I played the game or watched the show, I thought that I had Attack on Titan pegged. I thought that it was just a typical action anime. An anime about humans fighting these skinless giants that want to eat people. Ok, so there is a lot of that here in the show, but it has far more depth and lore than that and it is very character driven and I ended up really getting behind the main character, Eren Yeager.

Eren is the main character. He sees his mother get eaten by a Titan and this leads him to want to wipe all Titans from the world. There is a military unit that fights the Titans called The Survey Corps and Eren wants to become a strong enough warrior to join them and take the fight to the Titans.

Now, that first season is great as it builds things very slowly, but you are engrossed the whole time. We learn that there is more to Eren than we thought and he has the ability to turn into a Titan! Eventually, Eren and the other characters that join him, end up becoming members of the Survey Corps and are at war with the Titans.

That alone is a great premise and to be honest with you, Attack on Titan probably could have skated by on that alone. However, the lore here is very deep and the whole finding out about the history of the Titans and what they really were was something that I found incredibly fascinating.

Just when you think you have it all figured out you realize that the real threat and enemy are not these evil Titans, but another set of humans who live across the sea! It is fantastic stuff and impossible not to be amazed by. I think that the show has a lot of action and a lot of gore and violence too.

However, Attack on Titan is not the kind of anime that is trying to get by on its looks and action as it is far deeper than that. These characters have a lot of depth to them and I cannot think of another anime off the top of my head where I was so into the lore and history as I was in this one.

As of the time of me writing this I just got done watching the first part of the Final Chapters episodes and it did not disappoint. I know that the show is coming to an end, but I have a feeling they are going to completely nail the ending of this. I cannot wait to get the time to check out that final episode!

My wife got me the Attack on Titan manga box set (the first volume) for Christmas last year and I need to set some time aside to read it! However, while I cannot speak for how faithful the show is, I can tell you it is a thrilling and entertaining show that I am sure I will watch it from start to end again at some point.
