When it comes to Led Zeppelin, I like most of the hits, but I would not say that I am a huge fan. However, music movies have really been on the rise lately, and Becoming Led Zeppelin is something that has been in the works for quite a while. I remember hearing about this a few years back and it was said that a very early sample of the movie actually got a standing ovation.

The Movie Review – A Unique Look at Led Zeppelin’s Early Days
This is brought to us by filmmaker Bernard MacMahon who is no stranger to making music documentaries with his American Epic being very popular. There have been a ton of Led Zeppelin documentaries over the years, but this is the first one where the band actually was directly involved. It is pretty awesome that it took all this time for these legendary rockers to be on board with a documentary about them.
A Different Kind of Music Documentary
As I said, we have had a lot of music biopics over the last few years, but Becoming Led Zeppelin is not just another one. This is an actual documentary and rather than trying to cram their whole career into a two-hour film, they went about things a bit differently. This instead laser focuses on a specific portion of their legendary career.
That specific portion is the early days of the band and their first two legendary albums. If you are a massive fan, you will get a huge kick out of the clips of the guys before they were in Led Zeppelin. Actually, there is a lot of footage that has never been seen before in this movie. I thought it was so cool seeing them play in these small venues, some of which it was like a struggle for them all to fit on the stage!
Exclusive Footage and Interviews
We get brand new interviews from Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, seeing them talk about the early days and seeing their reaction to some of this old footage was just so awesome. We also get interviews with John Bonham, while he has passed away, some of these are from interviews that have never been released before. It is crazy just how much new footage is in this documentary.
A Soundtrack That Brings the Story to Life
As you would expect the soundtrack in the movie is fantastic. It flows along really nicely and as well as learning about the early days of the band, we do get bits of information about certain things going on in the world as well. It is just a very well made and highly polished movie. I only saw it on a regular screen, but I bet that old concert footage looked phenomenal on an IMAX screen.
Could This Lead to a Led Zeppelin Biopic?
When the movie ended and I was leaving the theatre, I did have a little think about something. With movie biopics being so popular now, I wonder if there is any desire by Sony (who put this movie out) to turn this into an actual music biopic. I think that it could work really well and it would certainly be something I would be interested in seeing. Even if you are not a huge fan of Led Zeppelin, as long as you have a love and appreciation for music, you will find this a fascinating story.
