The Film Review
The beautiful and intoxicating cinematography was handled by Roger Deakins, and the film won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Cinematography in 2018. The film centers on investigator K (Ryan Gosling), a man who locates and disposes of human-like androids in the near future. In the world of Blade Runner, humans coexist with “replicants”; robots that appear and act so much like humans, it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart.
Drenched in beautiful imagery and a dash of social commentary, Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most interesting, rewarding, and well-written sci-fi/mystery films since the original.
The crux of reviewing Blade Runner 2049 is not revealing too much about the plot, as nearly every point is essentially a spoiler. It also relies heavily on knowledge from the original film, since it’s a direct sequel.
I’ll do my best to avoid spoiling anything about the plot because Blade Runner 2049’s mystery is incredibly well thought out and I wouldn’t want to ruin it in the slightest. Besides being a fantastic science fiction story, the story of our main character K provides an incredibly strong amount of intrigue.
During a normal day of his work, K stumbles across a piece of information that, while seemingly insignificant, sets him on a path of stunning revelation. As he follows the small trail of bread crumbs, we get to explore a futuristic world that is both gorgeous and technologically dependent through and through.
Besides the nearly human robots, the world of Blade Runner 2049 is hyper-technological. It’s decidedly cyberpunk in nature, with bright neon that bathes the screen in pinks and blues. Nearly every shot is epic in scale and tone, and it’s backed by a powerful and ominous score. As a visual experience, Blade Runner 2049 exceeds in countless ways. It’s at times both an assault on your senses and a sensory treat, and the film flips back and forth effortlessly.
The Characters
The expertly crafted script is performed with equal quality, with standout performances from Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, and others. No matter how big or small the character, each one feels monumentally important and is acted as such.
Many secondary characters are just as memorable, thanks to great performances from Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, and others.
The Plot
Although it’s a sequel to a movie from 1982 and requires a lot out of the viewer, I cannot recommend Blade Runner 2049 enough.
The multi-layered plot is an addictive mystery that doesn’t take the viewers’ intelligence for granted. It’s a slow-burn crime thriller that is smartly written and expertly acted.

The award-winning visuals make the entire film a feast for the eyes, thanks to both stunning cinematography and intuitive direction from Denis Villeneuve.
The Score
The film is backed by a booming and evocative score, which creates a palpable tension in even the most action-filled scenes. It’s easily one of the best science fiction films of all time, in addition to being a completely fulfilling mystery that will leave you guessing until the very last scene.
