After watching Boomerang for the first time in many, many years, I am happy to say that I feel that this movie holds up really well. This was released in 1992, and it is a fantastic romantic comedy that I had a blast with, and it is a movie that I really do need to add to my physical movie collection. I saw there is a Blu-Ray version of this, so that is what I will pick up.
Where to Watch Boomerang
Boomerang was released on July 1, 1992. You can stream the film from a digital platform. If you like Eddie Murphy, you should also watch 48 Hrs., Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop.
The Movie Review
First thing, we need to talk about the amazing cast that this movie has. This is a stacked cast of amazing black actors with Eddie Murphy leading the charge. You do not have your typical over-the-top and super-intense Eddie Murphy that you usually had in the 80s and early 90s here. He is much more suave, cool, and stylish, and it is one of the more interesting characters that he played during this time.
Boomerang Cast and Eddie Murphy Performance
The rest of the cast is just as good and impressive. Halle Berry, Robin Givens, Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Grace Jones, and more. It is honestly one of the most stacked black casts of this time, and they all play their roles to perfection. Of course, with Halle Berry and Robin Givens being here, it is a movie that is very easy on the eyes, too!
Plot Summary and Story Setup
The plot of the movie centers around Eddie Murphy’s Marcus. Marcus is a hotshot player in the field of advertising, but he is also the ultimate player when it comes to women. Marcus has these incredibly high standards when it comes to women, and he is the kind of man who just uses them for his fun and then moves on, as no one can ever live up to his incredibly high standards long-term.
Marcus and Jacqueline
Well, things are going to change for Marcus! At work, Marcus has a new boss in Robin Givens; Jacqueline is like a female version of Marcus!. They get together, but she is not like the other women that he has been with, as she just kind of uses him, the same way he uses other women. The tagline of the movie is a player who gets played and that is pretty much what happens here.
Halle Berry as Angela
There is a twist to this tale, and that is Halle Berry’s Angela. It is impossible not to fall in love with Angela, and it is not just because Halle Berry is drop-dead gorgeous! She is such a likable character, and she and Marcus start to bond, and you can kind of see Marcus change a little here as he truly seems to like Angela. Of course, he screws this up big time as he is still kind of stuck in his ways, but there is a happy ending.
Boomerang Ending and Character Growth
Speaking of which, my wife…. hates the way that this movie ends! According to her, there is no way that Angela would have ever actually gotten with Marcus. I can kind of see what she is saying, due to the way he treated her, but I do think the movie does a good job of making us see that Marcus is far from being perfect, but he does care for Angela, and the impression that I got was that he was willing to try to change to be with her.
Boomerang Soundtrack and End of the Road by Boyz II Men
Ok, so we have to talk about the Boomerang soundtrack! Well, specifically, we have to talk about End of the Road by Boyz II Men, which I would put up there as one of the greatest movie songs of all time. When it comes to the slow jams, no one does it better than Boyz II Men, and I would put their Legacy greatest hits collection that came out in the early 00s as one of the best greatest hits albums of all time, too!
Final Thoughts
Boomerang is a fantastic movie, it really is. From the start to the end (well, maybe not the end, according to my wife), this movie grips you. The characters are interesting and actually feel real, the movie is cool, sexy, and fun, and it is just always a fantastic time. This is a movie that I 100 percent need to have in my physical collection, and actually, I have purchased it from Amazon while I have been writing this review! I think this is the first time I have ever written a review and got more and more determined to add it to my collection as I have gone on and then actually done it!
