Charlie’s Angels (2000)

There was an era in Hollywood during the early 2000s, where female-led films had become a big deal for the box office. Suddenly, there was a revolution of onscreen femme fatales in leading roles. Films such as Underworld, Resident Evil, Æon Flux, Tomb Raider, Kill Bill were everywhere and everyone loved them. However, this inherently American action fun had to start somewhere, right? Well, we have Charlie’s Angels to thank for that, a film so significant, that even today, it’s one of the most fun action flicks to watch!

The Movie Review

Charlie’s Angels is one of the most bombastic action-comedy films of the 2000s, and it’s directed by the man himself, McG. The film is based on the iconic ’70s television series, and McG brings it to the big screen in a way that does the original source material justice.

The story revolves around three highly skilled female private investigators, Natalie, Dylan, and Alex, who work for the mysterious Charlie Townsend. They are tasked with recovering stolen software that could compromise national security, and so, the Angels embark on a globe-trotting mission filled with twists, turns, and explosive action sequences.

The screenplay for Charlie’s Angels is a mixed bag. On one hand, it successfully captures the lighthearted spirit of the original TV series, blending action and humor with a playful tone.

The film embraces its campiness, making it quite effective at being incredibly entertaining, there simply isn’t a boring bone in this film’s body. However, the dialogue often falls flat, relying heavily on cheesy one-liners and innuendos that occasionally miss the mark.

The plot, while entertaining, feels predictable and lacks depth. Essentially, it sacrifices a lot of the substance that should make films like these engaging for a campy style at its forefront.

Thankfully, McG’s direction injects energy into Charlie’s Angels, making it a visually vibrant experience. The film is packed with flashy editing, quick cuts, and over-the-top action sequences that keep the pace brisk.

McG’s enthusiasm for the material shines through. However, at times, his stylistic choices overshadow character development and narrative coherence, leaving some scenes feeling a bit disjointed.

The trio of Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu form the heart of Charlie’s Angels and deliver performances that are superbly charismatic. Their chemistry is palpable, and their infectious enthusiasm makes the film more engaging.

The supporting cast, including Bill Murray as Bosley and Sam Rockwell as the primary antagonist, add a touch of comedic flair to the proceedings. However, even though the performances are great, some characters still feel quite underdeveloped, especially those that are side characters, they’re used for specific scenes and then forgotten.

The Visuals

The cinematography in Charlie’s Angels is pretty mundane. The film does embrace a colorful and glossy aesthetic, complemented by nice set designs and stylish costumes.

The action sequences, although sometimes exaggerated, are well-choreographed and showcase the physical abilities of the Angels. The production values are top-notch, creating a visually appealing world that enhances the overall entertainment value.

There’s nothing to complain about the visual side in this film, it just works.

Music

The soundtrack of Charlie’s Angels is undoubtedly a standout aspect. It features an array of catchy pop songs that perfectly encapsulate the film’s fun and energetic vibe.

I don’t really care much about the original soundtrack itself, but the playlist that was added to the film is genuinely phenomenal. It heightens the flavor and intensity of each sequence and makes things feel so much more exhilarating.

Verdict

Charlie’s Angels is not a perfect film, but it is with a hundred percent certainty, a great one. It is so much more entertaining than any other film in the femme fatale action film sub-category, and it fantastically captures the vibe of the original series, then turns it on its head with a brilliant blockbuster twist.

If you’re looking for peak entertainment with a dash of nostalgia, and you’re willing to overlook some flaws such as character development and pacing, then Charlie’s Angels is worthy of a watch.
