Cyrano

I have to be honest and say that I really did not want to watch Cyrano. My wife loves musicals and period-type dramas so I pretty much had to. While I went into this pretty ignorant of what it was, Peter Dinklage is an actor I admire greatly and I had heard a lot of buzz about his performance here. So, I stopped being grumpy and agreed to watch the movie with my wife.

Cyrano – the Movie Review

Before I get to my thoughts on the movie, I would later find out that this is actually based on a play. A play that Peter Dinklage himself would star in along with Haley Bennet who plays Roxanne. It was cool how these two incredible actors went from the stage to the screen in the same roles.

So, what is the plot of Cyrano? The movie is basically a love triangle story and a story about unrequited love. You can see where the plot is going very early on, but it is a heartfelt ride to get you there. Cyrano is deeply in love with Roxanne, but they are just friends and she has no idea about his true feelings.

Things are made more complicated as she meets and falls in love at first sight with a soldier, Christian (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) a soldier who is actually under Cyrano which makes things even more complicated. While Christian comes across as a good guy, he is very shy and not sure of himself at all.

Thankfully, Cyrano is something of a real wordsmith and he writes all these beautiful letters for Christian to give to Roxanne which start to make her fall deeply in love with him. It makes you question if she is in love with Christian just because of the words that Cyrano is writing…. As I said, you can get an idea of where this is going very early on.

While this may sound like a mushy love story and it kind of is, the backdrop for the movie is a brutal war and with Cyrano being a high-ranking member of the military, we do get to see a bit of action too. I liked the way that Cyrano was shown to be very capable with a sword as well as with his mind, it really made him seem like such a more well-rounded, complex, and ultimately likable character.

The music in the movie is something that my wife adored, but for me, it just was not my kind of thing. The music and musical numbers fit the setting and the plot perfectly. I can appreciate something without necessarily liking it and that is the best way I can get across my feelings about the music in this movie.

By the time the movie came to an end, I was kind of shocked. Not just because I was enjoying the movie, but because I was pretty damn heartbroken over what was happening. Peter Dinklage gives such a great performance it is impossible not to want him to have a happy ending! If you are like me and think that this movie is not for you, give it a try and you might get more out of it than you would think.

PROS
  • Peter Dinklage is probably going to get a ton of awards for this
  • While the music was not my cup of tea, it does fit the movie perfectly
  • The three main actors are all fantastic
  • While this is not the type of movie I would normally go for, I did actually have a good, but sad time with it
CONS
  • I think that it is a movie that is really made for a certain type of person and some people may not be able to get into it at all
  • While I can appreciate the music, I sure as heck would not be rushing to get the soundtrack!
