F9: The Fast Saga (Fast & Furious 9)

How crazy is it that as I write this there are 10 movies in The Fast & Furious franchise! I remember going to see the first movie with a girl I was dating in 2001! Anyway, this movie is delayed over a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but I can say if you are a fan of the series, you are going to have an awesome time with this!

The Movie Review

This whole franchise is one that you either get or you do not. While everything in the franchise and this movie is played straight, it is the over the top nature that we all love. F9 is perhaps the most over the top and craziest of all the movies and I mean that in the most complimentary way.

Despite what some people say, the Fast & Furious franchise has a very deep lore that is hard to keep track of. There are so many characters and moving parts that it could be easy to get lost. That also means that you 100 percent have to be schooled up on all the previous movies before coming into this.

To be fair, it does have a 9 in the title, so if someone who has not seen any other the other movies decides to on a whim see this then that is on them. Without giving too much away, I will give you the basics of what is going on here. Dom is kind of at peace, trying to live his best life of the grid when a strange message pulls him out of hiding and back into being a professional badass.

His brother, Jakob is out for blood and is part of a plan that could result in disaster for the world. Jakob is not alone as Charlize Theron’s Cipher is back and she is working with him. I freaking love Cipher by the way and do not feel that Theron gets enough credit for what she brings to this role.

I am a big wrestling fan so John Cena is someone I know well and I think that he was perfectly cast as Jakob. John Cena as Jakob is very physically imposing, but it is the looks he gives that really let you know this is a guy not to mess with. His and Dom’s backstory is something I find very interesting and I would not be against a movie diving deeper into it.

In typical Fast & Furious fashion, Dom and the family are trying to save the world, but there are more twists, turns, and characters that you will be able to keep track of. This movie is a 1000 MPH thrill ride and I loved every minute of it.  It even shocked me a few times with some of the stuff that happened.

As far as the action goes, I feel like they looked back at the past 9 movies and decided to make a greatest hits of the franchise. However, they also decided to try and up the ante as this movie has some spectacular set-pieces. The whole thing with magnets that can push and pull cars has to be seen to be believed and the Roman and Tej even get rocket-powered if you know what I am saying!

From what I have seen, F9 is only in theatres and I am so glad I went to see it. This is the first movie of 2021 where I feel you have to see it in a theatre. This is the kind of movie that is made for the big screen and if you have been looking for a movie to get you back into a theatre, I cannot think of a better one than this.

I am a huge fan of the series and even after 9 previous movies over 20 years, I am still impressed. As the movie is still fresh in my mind, I am not sure where I would rank it, but on spectacle alone, it has to be near the top. If you enjoy the franchise as I do, F9 is not going to disappoint you.
