The original Freaky Friday…well, the early 2000s remake, but the predecessor to 2025’s Freakier Friday was a ton of fun. When I heard that we were getting a sequel, over 20 years later, at first I thought it was an unnecessary sequel, but I still had a bit of hope that it could be a fun time. I was pleasantly surprised by just how busy my theatre was for this one, so hopefully, it does really well.
Where to Watch Freakier Friday
Freakier Friday was released on August 8, 2025. You can expect to be bale to stream the film from Disney+ once 2-3 months pass from its theatrical relase.
The Movie Review
I had noticed that over the last month or so, Disney+ has had the 2003 Freaky Friday, pretty prominently displayed in their main movies/shows tab at the top of the screen. I think that is why when I went to see it, there was a mixture of teenagers as well as adults in the theatre, as I am sure Disney+ Plus has gotten the 2003 movie to be seen by a whole new generation of kids.
The Return of Lohan and Curtis
To be honest, I prefer the 2003 movie, but Freakier Friday was a very entertaining and far better than a not super necessary 20 years later sequel had to be. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprise their roles as Anna and Tess, and they are just fantastic together. You can tell that they are clearly having a blast, and it is also fun how Lindsay Lohan, who once played the teen, now gets to play the mom.
New Faces and Familiar Favorites
They managed to get most of the cast back from the original movie, but our two main new characters are teenagers Harper, played by Julia Butters, who is Anna’s daughter, and Lily Reyes, played by Sophia Hammons. We also have Lilly’s dad, Eric, who is played by Manny Jacinto. The new additions are fun, but seeing the original cast, such as Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray, was awesome.
Teen Drama and a Twist of Fate
We have some high school girl teenage drama in this movie! Harper and Sophia are in the same year at school, and they do not get along at all! After an incident involving the two, their parents, Anna and Eric, are called in, and they hit it off and start dating! Things move really fast, and the two end up falling in love and want to get married, which leads to an engagement party/dinner.
More Body-Swapping Shenanigans
I will say that the plot is probably best described as the same, but kinda different, if that makes sense. During the big family dinner/engagement party, Harper, Sophia, Anna, and Jamie Lee Curtis’s Tess get palm readings, an Earthquake happens, and we get some more body swapping!
This time around, Harper is in her mother, Anna’s, body, and Sophia is now in the body of Tess. This is not Anna and Tess’s first rodeo, so they tell Harper and Sophia, the best way out of this is to pretend to be each other until it is broken, and then they will go back into their own bodies.
A Plan to Break the Engagement
Of course, Harper and Sophia are freaking out over this at first, but they soon realize that now that they are in these adult bodies, they can use this to break their parents up so that they do not have to become stepsisters! It is a fun premise, and you get the usual teenagers trying to pretend to be adults and the adults pretending to be teenagers. The big difference here is that Anna and Tess have been through this before, but now they are older.
Nostalgia and a New Generation
This is just a really fun movie and one of the surprise hits of the summer for me. The throwbacks to the 2003 Freaky Friday and the nods to other classic Lindsay Lohan movies were awesome. If you liked the first, well, the second, actually, it was the third, Freaky Friday movie, I do not see how you could dislike this. I think that I do prefer the 2003 movie, but there is honestly not much between them. If anything, going forward, these will be a double bill for me.
