Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

I was not able to check out Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire during opening weekend so I had to hear all the mixed reviews about it for a whole week! I thought the trailers looked fun and Ghostbusters: Afterlife was fantastic! Still, it was hard to ignore the stuff I was hearing. I never heard anyone say that it was straight-up bad, but I never heard any glowing reviews about it either.

A Sequel Facing High Expectations: The Review

If you check out what I had to say about Ghostbusters: Afterlife when that was released, I basically said that I was a huge fan of the series since I was a kid. Ghostbusters: The Video Game that came out during the Xbox 360/PS3 generation was the perfect Ghostbusters 3 so to be fair, a movie was always going to have a hard time living up to that. Yet, Ghostbusters: Afterlife managed to pull it off!

Delving into The Ghostbusters’ Latest Adventure

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on the other hand, nearly does. Hey, this was still a very fun movie and I think most of the negative stuff I have read is a bit harsh. Is it as good as Ghostbusters: Afterlife? I would have to say no, but that also had the wow factor of being a good Ghostbusters movie after such a long time, this had a much harder act to follow.

The Plot Thickens: A New Paranormal Challenge

This time around the Spengler family along with Gary Gooberson are living in New York City where they are working as full time Ghostbusters. They are staying in the actual Ghostbusters firehouse which was looked after by Winston Zedmore. There has been a lot of paranormal activity in New York again and there appears to be something wrong with the containment unit.

Also, Winston has been very busy. Turns out that Winston set up a whole department that was looking into the paranormal, but just like in the original movies, Walter Peck is there trying to cause trouble, and as he is the mayor he has the power to do so. The premise of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is pretty interesting.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s Villains and Heroes

An old antique ball is brought to Ray Stantz and it is revealed that it holds an ancient evil that kills with actual fear! The whole frozen with fear thing is really cool, but it is not actually in the movie as much as I thought it would be. Garraka is an awesome big bad and they look cool too.

Most of the character development in this movie is with McKenna Grace’s Phoebe. Phoebe is said to be too young to be a Ghostbuster so she is benched. This along with a trouble making ghost that she makes friends with puts her on a dangerous path. We also have another plot with a new character who is the owner of the orb. We find out about their family history and how supernatural powers run in the family.

The Ghostbusting Experience: Hits and Misses

When Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is good, it is really good. There are some great fun Ghostbuster moments with them chasing and capturing ghosts. The humor here is great and Paul Rudd as always is an absolute pleasure to watch, there is a scene with the Ghostbusters theme song that is cringy, but it had everyone in the theatre laughing.

Concluding Thoughts on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

By the time the credits rolled in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire I had a smile on my face and I was very entertained. However, if I am being honest, there were a few flat moments in the movie that did drag on a tad. Nothing that was straight up boring, but I think that the highs were so high that they made up for the parts of the movie that were not quite as exciting. While it may not have been as “spooktacular” as Afterlife, I still think it was a solid outing for The Ghostbusters.
