Have you ever seen a movie trailer, poster, or advertisement and wondered how the heck did that get made? Well, that was exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer for Greenland 2: Migration. To be fair, 2020’s Greenland is a decent disaster movie, and I have seen it a couple of times and thought that it was fun. However, it did not exactly do huge numbers at the box office, and the story did not really need a sequel. Although it did come out during the pandemic, so perhaps it did good streaming numbers?

The Movie Review
Anyway, the first movie was about the Gerrard Butler led Garrity family who were trying to make their way to a secret bunker as an asteroid was about to hit the Earth. As I said, it is a decent disaster movie with a lot of tension, and there were more than a few times where I wondered if this family would make it. In all honesty, it’s a solid 7, perhaps even an 8 out of ten, popcorn kind of movie.
Story and Plot of Greenland 2: Migration
Greenland 2: Migration takes place five years after the event of the first movie. John Garrity, his wife Allison, and their son Nathan are doing their best to survive the nightmare that Earth has become. They were safe inside the bunker, but life on Earth has become unstable due to massive electric storms and Earthquakes due to the aftereffects of the asteroid hit. Well, the Garrity’s bunker collapses due to an Earthquake and now they are in a fight for survival.
They find out that the asteroid impact site, for some reason, is where humanity is trying to rebuild, and this is where the Garrity family is trying to make their way to. To be fair, as a premise, I think this is a decent idea, and I do not know how else you could really do a sequel to Greenland, other than what they did here.
Is Greenland 2: Migration Worth Watching?
Yet, despite that, this is a completely unnecessary sequel, and I still wonder just how this got greenlit to be made. This has tanked at the box office, and while the first one has a half-decent reputation for being a fun movie, this lacks the charm and excitement that the first Greenland offered. As I write that, I feel I may be being a tad harsh, as this is not a horrible movie, but it is just very bland.
The special effects are pretty good, and there are a couple of exciting scenes. The story, though, is where this fails, as there was a real sense of urgency and desperation in the first movie; here, it just feels more forced. We find out something about John, and as soon as that was revealed, I knew exactly how it was going to end for him, and I was not wrong.
Final Thoughts on Greenland 2: Migration
I have seen way worse movies than Greenland 2: Migration, but this just does not need to exist. However, for as much as I have been complaining about this being an unnecessary sequel, I actually would be somewhat interested in how the characters get on after the events of this movie. Although I do not see any chance of this getting a sequel, given how much money it has reportedly lost. If this is on streaming and you liked the first, I do feel that it is worth giving it a chance; it may click with you more than me, and to be honest, I would not be against giving this another chance at some point.
