JUJUTSU KAISEN: Hidden Inventory/Premature Death – The Movie

While I am a big anime fan, Jujutsu Kaisen is not a series I have managed to get into. I did watch the movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, and I really enjoyed it. However, I never felt the urge to get stuck into the series and give it a real go. But when I saw my theatre had limited showings of the new movie. I thought I would give it a try.

The Movie Review

I knew that this was not a “movie” and that it was five episodes from the start of season 2 stitched together. However, other anime shows have done this, and I have found it to work really well. With me only seeing the first movie, which served as a prequel, I was a little worried that I would be a tad lost, but they do a great job of getting you up to speed, and if you have seen that original movie, you will be at an even better understanding.

Plot Summary and Characters

The basics of the story are that we have the Star Vessel, Riko Amanai. Satoro Gojo and Suguru Geto are tasked with protecting Riko, which at first sounds like a pretty standard and easy job to have. However, it turns out that there are dark forces at play here, and keeping her safe and alive is going to be much harder than they thought.

My Viewing Experience and Thoughts

To be fair, I do think I would have enjoyed the movie more if I were more familiar with the show. However, it was still a fun time, and I thought that there was a real franticness to the plot, as when the crap hit the fan, you truly wondered just how anyone was going to survive this mess that they found themselves in.

Animation and Visual Presentation

The quality of the animation is fantastic, and seeing it blown up on the big screen was amazing. Although some of the stuff was kind of censored by being put in black and white. To be fair, the black and white looked cool, but these were two pretty brutal scenes, which I think would have had even more weight behind them if they were in full color. I can see why some people hated the censorship, but I did not mind it all that much.

Pacing and Narrative Flow

The pacing of the movie is pretty good; they get you up to speed with the basics of the plot, and then BAM, it is on its way, and you truly do feel for our main characters as things start closing in around them. I can see why this is such a popular arc with fans of the series; some people say it is actually the best.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth Watching?

Am I glad I watched Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie? I would say yes, I had a fun time, it was well-made, and it was an interesting story that looked great. Yet, despite me saying that, I just did not get hooked enough into this universe to truly make me a fan and start to dive more into it. I actually preferred Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. I could easily see myself watching that again, but this one, I am not so sure.
