Despite only coming out in 2020, I have already seen Like a Boss twice because I so wanted to like this movie. I am a big fan of Rose Byrne, not just because she is easy on the eyes, but she is pretty much great and believable in everything she is in! I also really like Selma Hayek and her being a villain looked like it would be a ton of fun in the trailers. However, Like A Boss ended up being a rather annoying movie that I find hard to recommend to anyone!

The Movie Review
One of the craziest things about this movie is that it comes in at under 90 minutes, but it still feels like it overstays its welcome! We have these two best friends, Mai who is played by Tiffany Haddish, and who is loud and super obnoxious. I think that she is supposed to be “outgoing” and “confident” but she comes across as annoying as hell and no way would I want her as a friend!
Character Dynamics in Like a Boss
Her best friend is Mel, played by Rose Byrne. Mel is much more level-headed and has a better “business head” than the rash-thinking Mia. Mia and Mel own their own cosmetics company which also employs their two friends, Sydney and Barret. Sydney and Barrett are major highlights of the movie for me as Jennifer Coolidge and Billy Porter are a ton of fun.
The Antagonist’s Role
These two have some awesome ideas, but their company is in trouble as they are several hundred grand in debt! This is where Selma Hayek’s villainous Claire comes into play. She offers to buy a stake in their company to “help them out.” However, Claire is really wanting to drive a wedge between the two women so she can take the company and their great ideas for herself.
The Plot and Comedy Elements
Claire manages to divide Mia and Mel and the two have a falling out, but of course, they realize that they need each other and have to come up with a plan to stop Claire and save their business. At the end of the day, this is a gross-out comedy so a deep plot is not something I was expecting, but this could not be any more predictable.
Personal Reflections on the Movie
There are some legit funny moments in this movie, that horrific cake at the baby shower was so gross and so funny at the same time, probably the funniest thing the movie had. A huge problem for me is Mia. I kind of hate her! She is so loud and annoying that pretty much everything she did got on my nerves, I do not dislike Tiffany Haddish and have enjoyed her in more than a few things over the years, but I do not like her character here at all.
Final Thoughts on Like a Boss
At the end of the day, Like a Boss lasts under 90 minutes so it is not asking for a lot of your time. However, outside a couple of funny moments and the eye candy that is Rose Byrne and Selma Hayek, the movie did nothing for me. I picked this up on DVD for £2 and I will probably never watch it again! There are way better movies starring all of these talented ladies than this.
