The Film Review
Mary Poppins Returns is directed by Rob Marshall and features a cast consisting of Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury.
The Plot
Set in the year of 1935 at London, Marry Poppins Returns focuses on the life of a widowed Michael Banks who lives in his home with his three children John, Annabel, and Georgie.
After the death of his wife, Michael seems to live in depression especially because of all the responsibilities that have him trapped. One day, Michael gets a notice from the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, ordering him to repay his loans or else his house will be taken in custody by the bank.
He remembers his father’s shares in the bank and tries to look for the ownership certificate.
Unsuccessful in his attempts, he and his sister Jane try to sell items from their past. Whilst trying to sell his childhood kite, Michael encounters Mary Poppins who descends from the clouds. Surprised how their old nanny has not aged a bit, Michael and Jane let Mary stay at the house and take care of the children.
Mary makes the children experience the underwater world in the bathtub. Later on, the kids have an argument that damages an antique bowl that belonged to their mother. In hopes of getting it fixed, Mary takes everyone to the bowl’s animated landscape where the children realize how the president of the bank, William Wilkins Jr., is deliberately trying to kick out their father from the house.
After returning back, they try to tell Michael but are interrupted by Wilkins himself who tells the children to leave.
On the last night, Michael discovered that the material used to make the kite is the certificate itself. Consequently, Mary and the rest gather around to turn back time on Big Ben, so they can give the certificate to Wilkins on time before 12 am.
They succeed only to find out that a piece of that certificate is missing which holds the signatures. Luckily, Wilkins’ uncle shows up and after accusing Wilkins of malicious activities, he fires him.
The film ends with Michael and his family living happily as they float on magical balloons. Mary ascends back towards the sky as she smiles at them.
Who is Mary Poppins?
Mary Poppins as a character is someone who is deeply associated with every child and adult who has seen the original film.
A sequel meant that people had set expectations in terms of plot as well as Emily Blunt’s acting skills. Blunt plays her role extremely well in the sense that she brings out the modern Mary whilst keeping her character full of nostalgia at the same time.
Like the original film, this sequence also includes live-action and traditional hand-drawn animation. According to the filmmakers, there were over 70 animation artists working on the film in manually drawing hand-drawn 2D animations.
The Movie Soundtrack
The music and original film score were composed by Marc Shaiman. The soundtrack album was released on 7th December 2018 by Walt Disney Records.
The Bottom Line
Overall, Mary Poppins Returns has more or less been treated as a worthy successor to the original film. It was received with praise, especially from the child fans who proved out to be more than entertained by the colorful performances.
