It takes a lot to blow me away with a movie these days, but Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim certainly did this. This movie completely took me by surprise and I would class it as one of my favorite movies of the last decade! The Film Review
I do not want to spoil the story for you guys so I will not. The basics of the story are that Earth is under attack from these giant monsters called kaiju that appear from a portal at the bottom of the ocean. These monsters come in all shapes and sizes and mankind decided to band together to stop them. This is where the Jaegers come in.
What the heck is a Jaeger? Well, it is a giant robot that is piloted by two humans sharing a neural link. It sounds complicated, but it is not. The two humans have to be in sync with each other in order for the Jaeger to operate and be able to kick kaiju ass. Each nation has its own Jaeger and each one (and the human pilots of course) has a rather stereotypical personality, but that is just part of the fun.
The stars of the movie are 100 percent the kaiju and the Jaegers. The cast features the likes of Idris Elba who is awesome as always, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. One performance I thought was really fun was Ron Pearlman who plays this black-market dealer of kaiju parts that he scavenges. The acting is not bad by any means, but you just do not care a whole lot about the people.
As this is a movie from Guillermo del Toro and it is about giant robots and monsters, you know this is going to be quite the spectacle. Well, this is a fantastic looking movie; this is most certainly a movie you want to watch at least in Blu-ray (I have not yet seen the 4K) as it is a joy for the eyes. The movie looks and sounds incredible!
It is the action that makes this movie a must-see for me. The battles with the kaiju and Jaegers are amazing and it was the kind of thing that I as a guy in his 30s and my son both thought was incredibly awesome. Even though this is the better part of 10 years old as I write this, Pacific Rim still looks fantastic.
If for some crazy reason you have still not seen Pacific Rim (as well as its awesome sequel) you need to get on that. This is not a movie that is going to win you over with its dialogue and characters! This is a movie that is 100 percent all about having fun and I really do not think it is possible to watch this movie and not have a great time. This is a movie that could not be any easier for me to recommend.
