Promising Young Woman is a thriller that was released at the end of 2020. It is a movie that sounds like it would be pretty average when you describe it to someone. However, it is also the kind of movie that once you start watching, you cannot turn away as you are desperate to know what happened.

The Movie Review
The movie was written and directed by Emerald Fennell and it is her directorial debut and she has done a fantastic job. In many ways, I would say that this is probably best described as a revenge movie. The main character is a woman called Cassie (played by Carrie Mulligan) who is 30, lives at home with her parents, and has a weird life.
During her high-school days, Cassie’s best friend Nina was raped and by one of her classmates called Al. The school did nothing about it and Cassie has a very hard time dealing with this and this is what causes her life to go off the rails. She spends her time going to bars and getting men to try and hook up with her, then revealing she is sober when they try it on with her.
One day at her job, Cassie is approached by a guy called Ryan who she knew from high-school. Ryan tells her that Al is about to get married and this really sets her off. She decides that she is going to take revenge on all of those that she feels are responsible for failing Nina when she was raped, especially Al!
Cassie goes all-in on making these people pay and it can be pretty hard to watch, but at the same time, there is a kind of dark humor to it all. Complicating her revenge plot is the fact that she starts to develop feelings for Ryan and even becomes somewhat happy during all of this.
I cannot really say any more without spoiling what happens, but let me tell you, Promising Young Woman is one hell of a ride. It is one of those movies that has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Cassie is a very interesting character and you never know just what the heck she is willing to do.
While I mentioned Carrie Mulligan, it is worth mentioning that this movie has a fantastic cast. Alison Brie is great as a former friend, Madison and so are Clancy Brown and Jennifer Coolidge who plays Cassie’s parents. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but everyone involved in this movie does a great job in making you believe they are real.
The Bottom Line
I highly, highly recommend that you check out Promising Young Woman. It is a fantastic movie and one of the best that I have watched in the early part of 2021. It was a movie that I watched with my wife and we both loved it. If thrillers, revenge, and even a bit of dark humor are what you like, this is for you.
