The Movie Review

The thing about Ron’s Gone Wrong is that when you described what the movie is about it all sounds very cliché. However, this story about what it is like to grow up in the age of social media and always being online is truly fantastic. The move has an excellent voice cast with Jack Dylan Glazer in the lead as Barney and Zack Galifianakis and his perfect comedic timing as his B-Bot, Ron.

As well as these two, Ed Helms, Olivia Colman, Justice Smith, and Rob Delaney also lend their talented voices to the movie. At its core, Ron’s Gone Wrong is a coming-of-age movie about a kid called Barney. Barney is a bit odd and his family who are immigrants from Bulgaria do not have a ton of money.

The craze sweeping the nation and his school are these things called B-Bots. A B-Bot is like the ultimate iPhone and media device that is all wrapped up in a robot buddy. Kids use them to take photos, be on social media and play games. Barney’s family cannot afford a B-Bot, but one day, Barney’s dad (Ed Helms) manages to find one that is cheap.

What seems like a dream deal turns a bit sour as the B-Bot Barney gets is defective and just as odd as he is. The thing is Ron is exactly what Barney needed in his life! The relationship between Barney and Ron is fantastic and the reason it truly grabs you is because of the fantastic performances from the two actors.

The movie deals with kids growing up too fast thanks to social media and the trouble that big media can cause. As I said before, this premise could be classed as being cliched and even eye rolling inducing. Yet it never is because the writing and the acting are so well done. It is a movie that just works on so many levels.

Ron’s Gone Wrong is certainly going to make you laugh a great deal. Yet, you truly do care about Barney and just want him to be ok. The movie had my son and me laughing through most of it. However, by the end of the movie, I can say that it did make me think how hard it must be to be a kid in this day and age of social media pressures.

I have watched so many family movies in 2021 that I have probably forgotten at least a quarter of them. I can hand on heart say that as far as family movies this year go, Ron’s Gone Wrong is one of if not the best. If you are looking for a heartfelt, but also very funny movie to watch with the family, none released in 2021 are better than this!
