The Film Review
The film brings us the story of a Koala bear named Buster Moon who owns a musical theatre. Buster, after experiencing financial issues, decides to hold up a music competition in order to raise money to pay off the bank. However, Buster’s assistant, Miss Crawly, accidentally ends up mistyping $100,000 instead of $1000 on the promotional posters, which attracts many musicians from all around the city. Not only does Buster not have enough money to pay off the winner, but the struggle to win the prize also causes the contestants to start fighting with each other and their loved ones causing all sorts of chaos in the theatre.
The story focuses on Buster and his efforts to not just satisfy the contestants, but also figure out a way to raise the money in order to pay off the winner of the contest along with the bank.
One of the best things about the film is how the story consists of an original idea by the CEO of Illumination Entertainment himself, Chris Meledandri. Director Garth Jennings made full use of the idea to set up a storyline based on a script which contained a combination of just the right kind of clichés and jokes. When Buster, in the film, goes ahead with the plan to give away the mistyped amount, he attracts a number of distinct talented actors from around the city. Jennings made use of this opportunity to touch the lives of all the major characters who came in to take part in the competition.
With each character having a unique personality trait along with a different issue, Jennings made sure that the viewers got a laugh out of at least some, if not all the characters.
Another major aspect of the film is the number of songs involved in it. Being a musical film, it comes as no surprise how the movie contains over 80 songs all sung by the contestants of the music competition voiced by the actors who were playing those characters. Most of the songs were current or recent pop hits and were linked to the character’s own personality in a way, like how the character of Meena, who was initially too afraid to sing, sang Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing by Stevie Wonder, portraying how she overcame her fear of stage fright.
Despite all the variety of music and acts involved, the film has still managed to attract criticism onto it. Critics believe that the film is simply shallow and has no real deep meaning involved for children to take inspiration from. The script is a mix of random musicals and uncanny jokes which don’t even make sense, considering how the majority of its viewers are children aged under 13.
Overall, one can admit that despite a large number of musicals, the film still manages to entertain and make its audience laugh on numerous occasions. The film is of the kind which can be watched comfortably with the whole family more than once.
