Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

While Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would not make my top ten Disney movies of all time list. I do have to say that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the most important animated movie of all time! This was Disney’s first full movie and it would ultimately lead the way for how animated movies would be made and respected for what is now the better part of 100 years!

The Movie Review

Even though I was raised as a Disney kid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was not one of the first Disney movies I saw. As a matter of fact, I saw the scene in Gremlins before I saw the actual movie. We did eventually get a bootleg copy on VHS and it was a movie that I did enjoy, but I think had I seen the full movie before I saw Gremlins, it would have made more of an impact on me.

Anyway, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is about a young woman called Snow White. She lives with her stepmother, the Evil Queen who is obsessed with being the fairest in the land. Snow White just makes the best of her situation and even with the hard hand she is dealt, she is so likable.

One day, the Magic Mirror tells the Queen that Snow White is now the fairest in the land. The Evil Queen is bat poop crazy and decides that Snow White needs to be killed… talk about an overreaction! She hires the Huntsman to take her into the woods, kill her and then bring back her heart!

Thankfully, the Huntsman is a good guy and he tells her to run. Snow White runs away and ends up finding a little cabin in the woods. She cleans the cabin and soon learns that a family of dwarfs lives there. I love the Seven Dwarfs they are just so much fun and have a ton of personality.

My favorite has always been Doc, I could not give you a reason why, I just love his schtick! The Queen eventually learns of the Huntsman’s betrayal and takes matters into her own hands. She tricks Snow White with a poisoned apple and Snow White ends up in a deep sleep, only to be awoken by true love’s kiss!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a very charming movie and I can only imagine just how mind-blowing this movie was when it was released in the late 30s. It is truly a landmark title and one of the biggest things to happen to cinema and its success cannot be overlooked. It was successful each time it was re-released into theatres and then was a massive success when it came home.

Look, I will be honest with you, I respect the hell out of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for what it did for not just Disney, but cinema in general. However, I will say that this is just an “ok” movie for me. I like the stuff with the Dwarfs and think they are a lot of fun, but I actually get more of a kick out of watching the “High Ho” scene in Gremlins than I do out of watching the whole of this movie!
