As soon I knew there was going to be a Sonic the Hedgehog movie, I knew that I was going to be there from day one. Most people know that the movie was delayed so they could work on and improve Sonic’s design. What most people didn’t know was that this was going to turn out to be a really fun family movie that well and truly did Sonic justice.

The Movie Review
I always felt that Sonic could translate well to the big screen. Numerous TV shows and an animated movie have proven there is more to the lore of Sonic than most people would think. With that being said, I liked how they made this its own thing, but at the same time had many of the “classic” Sonic elements that fans wanted.
The basics of the story are this. Sonic is growing up, minding his own business on his own planet when he and his “mother” are attacked. She sacrifices herself to send Sonic and a bag of rings to Earth. The rings in this movie are interesting in that they are portals to another world.
On Earth, Sonic lives on his own, he is a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, but very lonely. He strikes up a friendship with a cop, Tom (James Marsden) and his wife, Maddie (Tika Sumpter) only they do not know they are friends! Sonic views them from afar and has this fantasy about them being a family.
Well, there is an “accident” and the government sends in Dr. Robotnik played awesomely by Jim Carrey to find out what is going on. This is where Tom and Sonic meet and the movie turns into a buddy kind of movie. The relationship between the two is great and Tom agrees to help Sonic get his rings back. Of course, Robotnik wants Sonic to experiment on and use his powers.
I found the movie to have a ton of heart. It was funny, it looked fantastic and I felt the portrayal of both Sonic and Robotnik was great. Sonic looking for a family was a part of the story that clicked with me and seeing him get this was really cool. Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz and he does a great job bringing Sonic to life.
The movie looks amazing. I know that the first Sonic design was not great, but at this point who cares? What matters is that they listened to people and fixed it. As a result, I really do not see how you could have brought Sonic to life better than what they did here.
If you are looking for a fun movie that is great for kids and parents alike. You really cannot go wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog. You will laugh, wince and even get attached to Sonic and want him to be ok. I am legit excited to see where this franchise goes, so will you be if you stay after the credits!
