The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to the first Amazing Spider-Man movie and the fifth movie in the overall Spider-Man film franchise. Taking place a short time after the first movie, this sequel once again follows Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), a personable teenager with web-slinging superpowers. Having mostly adjusted to his powers, this second film sees a much more confident Spider-Man, although there are still plenty of obstacles left for him to hurdle.

With a bigger budget and expanded cast, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 offers more action, a larger story, and plenty of classic Spider-Man antics. By mixing together iconic Spider-Man villains with heart-pounding action, the film looks to win over fans with splendor. Does this high-voltage sequel have enough juice to keep the Spider-Man train going, or is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a disappointing blunder?

The Movie Review

The story picks up not long after the events of the previous film, with Peter Parker and his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) graduating from college. Despite a mostly happy relationship, Peter is constantly conflicted about things, due to the promise he made to Gwen’s father in the previous movie. Worried for her safety more than usual, Peter tries his best to protect her from the dangers of the city.

The dangers are aplenty here, as the film features an assortment of villains. Firstly, there’s Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), a loner who works at Oscorp and has an obsession with Spider-Man. After an accident at work involving experimental electric systems, Max transforms into the supercharged villain Electro. Also introduced in the film in Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), a longtime Spider-Man character with plenty of villainous potential.

In addition to the criminal antics caused by Electro and friends, Peter must deal with the ghosts of his past, including the unsolved mystery involving his parents’ disappearance. As Peter uncovers new clues, his search takes him to some exceptionally dark places. Once again, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 juggles an ultra-serious story with some of its more goofy elements, but it does so much better than in the previous film.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 can feel corny from time to time, but for the most part, the action is fantastic and the performances are effective. The big issues with the movie come from its plot, which is packed to the brim with excessive characters, unneeded scenes, and unfinished story arcs. A good portion of the movie feels like a lead-up to an eventual third movie, which unfortunately will never come to fruition.

The film has some fantastic action and impressive special effects, including fun slow-motion fight scenes and exciting chase sequences. Especially in battles with Electro, the action scenes are packed with color, speed, and style. Apart from a few silly costume choices, there are very few complaints when it comes to the action in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

If you enjoyed the first movie, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy the movie. It offers more high-flying superhero action with a good balance of drama and intrigue, making for an entertaining thrill ride. Unfortunately, the story can feel awkwardly paced and drawn out, especially when it deals with the romantic subplot of Peter and Gwen. Despite these issues, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a surprisingly hard-hitting comic-book film with plenty of memorable scenes. If you’re a fan of the Spider-Man series, you might not love every minute, but you’ll definitely get a kick out of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
