The Blues Brothers was comedy gold in my house when I was growing up. This was a real favorite of my dads and there is a good reason as to why this is regarded as one of the best comedies of all time! This is Dan Akroyd (check him out in Ghostbusters) and John Belushi at their very best and even though as I write this, The Blues Brothers is over 40 years old, it has a real timeless quality about it. Probably the best compliment I can give this movie is that it is one of those movies that I have liked a little bit more each time I have watched it over the years.

The Movie Review
Part comedy, part road trip movie, and part musical, The Blues Brothers is just a fun as hell ride to be on. Dan Akroyd and John Belushi play the roles of Elwood and Jake (or Joilet if you prefer) Blues. Jake has been doing some time in jail for robbery and his brother Elwood picks him up on his parole day in his Bluesmobile, one of the coolest and most iconic cars of all time!
Elwood has the cops after him as he has a ton of driving violations! The brothers decide to go to the orphanage where they grew up to speak to Reverend James… played by James Brown, here they discover that the orphanage is in danger of closing due to a tax bill. This leads to Jake having a great idea that they should get their old band back together so that they can play a gig and get the money needed to save the orphanage!
An Epic Adventure to Reunite the Band
From here, we have the brothers hitting the road and getting into all kinds of trouble and mishaps as they try to get their band together. Not only this, but they keep ending up in explosions and have the cops, nazis, and even a country band out causing them a great deal of trouble and stress.
A Legendary Cast and Memorable Moments
The chemistry as you would expect from Belushi and Akroyd is off the charts, I never saw the SNL skit that this was based on, but I have never felt like I was missing out on anything. The supporting cast here is epic, James Brown is not the only musical legend in the movie, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and a host of other amazing musicians are part of the movie too! We also have a great non-musical supporting cast with the likes of Carrie Fisher, John Candy, and even co-writer John Landis
There are so many funny moments and the way just getting from point A to point B ends up with them in some kind of trouble and in some kind of car chase is always hilarious and is just as funny today as it was the first I saw it. The movie is not just all about over-the-top comedy, it has a tremendous soundtrack and the characters of Elwood and Jake are very easy to like so you get invested in what is actually a pretty honorable quest, right from the start.
The 4K Release: A Must-Have for Fans
Being such a huge fan of the movie, I did pick up the 40th anniversary 4K release and it is great, I do not see how they could make The Blues Brothers look or sound better than they did with that 4K release! However, I do feel that they could have put at least one new extra/special feature on there as the ones included have all been on earlier releases of the movie. Still, if you are like me and love upgrading your favorite movies to 4K, you will not be disappointed with the 4K transfer here.
Final Thoughts: A Comedy Classic with Endless Rewatch Value
In all, The Blues Brothers is just an all time classic. I have seen this movie many times over the years and it has never failed to entertain me. Also, I want to say that Blues Brothers 2000 is nowhere near as bad as people make out. Granted, it is nowhere near as good as this, but it is not total garbage.
