The Gentlemen was the first great movie of 2020 (although it was technically premiered in December 2019). This movie is also one of the best Guy Ritchie has ever done. If you like his work such as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, you will love this. This is a fantastic return to form for him and these are the kinds of movies that I wish he would focus on making.

The Movie Review
Talking about The Gentleman is rather tough. It is the kind of movie; you do not want to have spoiled for you as so much of the fun is it unfolding before your eyes. I will give you the basics of the story, but there are no spoilers here at all. I will say that like other Guy Ritchie movies of the same style, The Gentlemen is a movie you have to watch more than once to appreciate it.
That is not a bad thing though as the movie is so much fun, you will not mind. I have watched it three times and picked up on little things each time I have. The basics of the story are that we have an American weed guru (Mathew McConaughey) who is looking to sell his business in the UK. This should be straightforward enough, but a quirky and dangerous cast of characters get in the way and complicate things.
Just when you think you have it all figured out, something crazy happens and you are wondering where things are going to go. The storytelling is very clever. As well as seeing events happen, we also get certain characters telling us about certain things. It is hard to explain, but it works very well and gets you more invested in what is happening. It is a movie with many quotable lines, I have gotten in trouble with my wife many times for saying things from the movie!
The cast is one of if not the best I have seen in a Guy Ritchie movie. Mathew McConaughey is fantastic as Mickey, the guy looking to sell his weed business. Charlie Hunnam as Raymond is one of the coolest characters, I have seen in a movie in quite some time. Then we have Hugh Grant who plays, Fletcher.
I am not a fan of most of Hugh Grant’s work in the 90s and early 00s where it was like he was playing the same role every movie. Here though, Hugh Grant is truly fantastic and having an absolutely awesome time playing this role. From his accent to just the way he is, he was a riot in this role!
That is just the tip of the iceberg for the fantastic talent in this movie and I could write a little about each and every actor as they all do a great job. There are so many great characters here that I feel over time many will become cult favorites. This has been the case for some of Guy Ritchie’s other work too.
So far this is one of my favorite movies of the year. The best thing I can say about The Gentlemen is that it manages to be a very fun time, but it is also very, very clever as well. I highly recommend you check this out. As I write this review, the movie is actually available on Amazon Prime!
