The Film Review
The Plot
Released on 12th March 2012, The Hunger Games features 12 different districts who are forced to select two tributes each who then fight against one another till only one survives.
The film focuses on the character of Katniss Everdeen, a tribute from District 12 who, along with her fellow tribute Peeta Mellark, embark on a journey together as opponents.
Initially, Katniss tries to avoid any sort of combat, but the Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane sets a forest fire which forces her to move towards the rest. At the end of the first day, only eleven out of twenty-four tributes survive.
Katniss comes across District 11’s Rue and the two then become allies and team up against the Careers whom Peeta is a part of initially. Soon, however, Rue dies from an injury inflicted through a spear and Katniss covers the body with flowers.
Meanwhile, Katniss’ trainer Haymitch persuades Crane to change the rules from one survivor to two survivors with the condition that they belong to the same district.
This, in turn, allows Katniss to team up with Peeta and the two then manage to survive throughout the day escaping near death injuries and sicknesses. As the game progresses forward and more tributes die, Crane releases a number of beasts to further up the stakes.
The result portrays a form of stalemate as the three survivors – two from District 12 and one from District 2 – battle neck to neck until Cato manages to grab Peeta and use him as a human shield.
With clever precision, Katniss shoots him to his death with an arrow. Crane makes a bold move by reverting the initial rule from two surviving winners to one but is forced to call both Katniss and Peeta as winners after they threaten to kill themselves by eating poisonous berries together.
The Hunger Games: the Movie Production
The initial process for the production of The Hunger Games began in 2009. In order to live up to the hype before its release, the VFX artists brought in and applied new kinds of technology.
This included touchscreen desktops, monitor content, and data-generated hologram representing the Arena. In addition, the visual effects artists also used computer-animated 3D fires and smoke for the forest fire sequence. Furthermore, in order to form the audience, crowd simulations were also applied.
Moving on, the official soundtrack for the film was composed by T-Bone Burnett and James Newton Howard. The score album was released on 26th March 2012.
The Bottom Line
The Hunger Games became an absolute hit as soon as it hit the cinemas. The film managed to gross over $694 million at the box office, making it the ninth highest grossing film of 2012. The success of this film was the reason a sequel was announced which went on to be released the very next year.
