The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) is a sequel to the much acclaimed The Lego Movie (2014) which was a monster of a hit. For a movie that was based on a long-running toy, The Lego Movie had so much heart, charm and laughs that a sequel was always going to happen. Plus let’s face it that the first movie ended on one heck of a cliff hanger and we all wanted to know what those maniacs from Planet Duplo were going to do!

The Film Review

The Lego Movie has spawned into quite the franchise with Lego Batman and also Lego Ninjago going on to be huge hits. So it is fair to say that there is a lot of pressure on the team (behind the camera, not the Lego people in front of it) to knock it out of the park again. Well, the band was brought back together and I can tell you right of the back…. They did it!

The story of the movie is set five years after the devastating events of Taco Tuesday from the first movie. The kid from the first movie has been forced to share his Lego with his little sister and as a result, people from Duplo keep stealing things and people from Bricksburg! General Sweet Mayhem is the leader of this Duplo Army and she is here for one thing.

That is to take Batman back to her home planet so that he can marry, Queen Watevra Wa’Nab. As well as the caped crusader, Lucy, Benny, Metalbeard, and Unikitty have been taken too. All of the heroes of Bricksburg are gone and there is of course only one Lego man up to the task of saving them and that is Emmet.

One of the things I love about The Lego Movie 2 is the way Emmet is still so upbeat. Despite the fact that Bricksburg has been turned into a real living hell, he is still just doing his thing, loving life and dreaming of a world where he and Lucy can be together. Even though he is haunted by dreams of something called Mom-Aggedon!

The Lego Movie 2 is just as charming as the first Lego Movie and while you know that there is some kind of real-world twist coming to it. I think that this one does it actually better than the first and even though you do see it coming it is still very well done.

The voice cast though is what really shines in this movie. I would have to write about ten more paragraphs to talk about how great people like Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, and Alison Brie are. For me though once again, Pratt is the standout. He is actually pulling double duty in this movie as he is also voicing Rex Dangervest. I loved Rex Dangervest! He is like a mixture of all of Chris Pratt’s past roles.

The Lego Movie 2 is just as charming, funny and witty as the first movie. If you liked the first Lego Movie it goes without saying that you will like this. It is a really fun movie that is great for both kids and adults alike. You can take the kids to the movies to see this and you will have a great time yourself. Just be warned that like the first movie, you will have “everything is awesome” stuck in your heads for weeks after you have seen it!
