The New Mutants was actually the first movie I saw in theatres when things reopened up where I live. This movie is part of the X-Men franchise and it is actually the end of the franchise that started all the way back in 2000. This was the last X-Men related movie from Fox and it was a rather interesting way for them to go out.

The Movie Review
The development of this movie is one of the most interesting things about it. It is crazy to think that the movie was released a full two years after the intended release date. Still, The New Mutants was an entertaining ride and it even made me wish that this Fox X-Men movie universe would continue!
The movie is about this secret facility that is there to supposedly help young mutants learn about their powers and serve as a kind of youth detention center. You see each of the young mutants here has a troubled past and is trying to move past that. This along with the growth of their mutant powers makes their lives very difficult.
The mutants in the movie are Rahne (Wolfsbane) played by Maisie Williams – Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, Illyana Rasputin played by Anya Taylor-Joy – Beth from The Queen’s Gambit, Sam (Cannonball) played by Charlie Heaton – Jonathan from Stranger Things, Dani (Moonstar) played by Blue Hunt – August from Another Life, and Bobby (Sunspot) played by Henry Zaga – Brad from 13 Reasons Why. It is a relatively small cast with the “villain” being Dr. Cecilia Reyes who is keeping the mutants in line and supposedly trying to help them learn about their powers and atone for the mistakes they have made in their past.
The mutant youngsters find themselves fighting off these Smiling Men. I have to say that the Smiling Men are the creepiest of any bad guys that I have seen in a Marvel Cinematic Universe or X-Men movie! Seeing these mutants try and get better is kind of heartbreaking.
I remember before the movie released that many people were saying this would be a “horror” movie. I would not say that this is a horror movie, but it is certainly a lot creepier than any other X-Men movie. I liked the small cast of characters in this movie and while most of the film is contained to the facility, I liked the overall setting.
My favorite of the mutants was Illyana who even has her little buddy Lockheed showing up to help. Seeing these five strangers have to come together and help each other to survive sounds cheesy, but it does work. You do actually care about these characters, even the ones who at the start of the movie you think you will not like.
The movie has a tremendous end scene with a truly epic battle that had me on the edge of my seat. It was so cool that it made me wish we could get another movie where these mutants could really use their powers. Also, it once again teases the arrival of Mr. Sinister, a character I have been waiting for years to arrive in this franchise and now that it is ended, he never will!
I think that The New Mutants is well worth checking out. It is a movie that has a lot of action, but it also has some depth too. Each of the characters feels unique and I think that it was good seeing a superhero movie with a smaller more focused cast. I do not think any of us would have picked this to be the movie that brought this X-Men franchise to a close, but it is still worth a watch.
