The Nightmare Before Christmas

Today I get to talk about a top ten movie of all time for me, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Based on the story by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick. This is a movie that just gets better and better with each viewing for me. It is a movie that is considered a Halloween movie, but I always watch it at Christmas time.

The Movie Review

The movie is set in a place called Halloween Town. Jack Skellington is the king of the pumpkin patch and he is who keeps Halloween Town ticking. Each year, Halloween Town has a huge Halloween celebration, but Jack is growing weary of doing the same old thing each and every year.

After yet another Halloween celebration he takes a walk through the woods and comes across a series of doors. Each door represents a different holiday and the one with a tree on it captures Jack’s attention. Upon going through the door, Jack ends up in Christmas Town and he is filled with wonder and decides to bring Christmas to the people of Halloween Town.

Complicating matters is Oogie Boogie who sends his three henchmen, Lock, Shock, and Barrell out to capture “Sandy Claws” add to this Sally trying to get away from her creator, Dr. Finklestein and you have a movie that has a lot of movie parts. The story is truly amazing stuff and no matter how many times I see this movie I am always caught up in everything that happens.

Jack Skellington is a tremendous character and he does show a lot of growth. Jack goes from being depressed, excited, feeling remorse, and ultimately figuring out what is important. The movie gets credit for plenty of things, but Jack being such a well-developed and deep character it does not get enough credit for in my opinion.

The movie has an awesome cast, Chris Sarandon as Jack is fantastic, but my favorite character has always been Oogie Boogie. The Nightmare Before Christmas has one of the best soundtracks of any movie. The more I think about it, this is probably my favorite soundtrack of any movie!

The movie is made with stop motion and it looks amazing. I have watched many documentaries over the years about the making of this movie and the amount of work that went into it is just staggering. It is a true triumph of film making and one of those movies that every one needs to have seen.

Nightmare Before Christmas is just such a great movie. It may look dark and scary for kids, but it is a movie that has a ton of heart and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a movie that never gets old for me, it looks incredible and the soundtrack is phenomenal. My only complaint about this movie is that for some reason on Disney Plus, the movie is not in 4K.
