The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is one of those movies that I knew I was going to have a lot of fun with from the moment I saw the initial trailer. Nicolas Cage being “Nick Cage” doing what we all think Nicolas Cage does is hilarious, he fully embraced it all and you can tell he must have had a whole lot of fun making this movie.

The Movie Review
The plot of the movie sees Nicolas Cage playing a slightly (well I think it is slightly) exaggerated version of himself. His agent (Neil Patrick Harris) tells him that he can make a million bucks by hanging out with his superfan, Javi Gutierrez at his birthday party. Javi is played by the always fantastic Pedro Pascal and he once again lights up the screen with his performance here.
While Javi is a Nick Cage fanboy, Javi and Nick do develop a real friendship with is easily the best part of the movie. These two have fantastic chemistry and anytime they share a scene, it is always a lot of fun and done very well. Javi could have been annoying, but they never go all the way with him being an over-the-top and annoying fanboy and that makes you warm to him so much more.
Javi is being watched by the CIA who suspect him of arms dealing and being behind a kidnapping. Cage is confronted by two CIA agents – Martin and Vivian and they want him to be a mole. This sets up some hilarious scenes, but I do think it is not as big a part of the movie as the trailers made it out to be. The other plot of the movie is about Cage and his family and that is probably the only underdeveloped aspect of the movie.
This is just a really fun action comedy and director Tom Gormican manages to keep the action and comedy very well balanced. There are many times in the movie when classic Nick Cage performances such as Face Off and The Wicker Man are parodied. The moments where we get to see him be “Nick Cage” are not overused as much as you would think and they are even more hilarious and amazing than you probably think they are.
While clearly Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal are the two that are getting all the attention. This movie also has a great supporting cast, the two CIA agents are played by the always funny, Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholzt and I wish they got a little more time in the movie to show off their comedy chops.
If you have seen the trailer for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and liked what you saw, you will like this movie. It is funny, it has a lot of crazy action and it also has a lot of heart thanks to the friendship between Nick and Javi. This is a really fun movie and one that is super easy for me to recommend.
