The Film Review
Released on 22nd October 2013, the story begins as we get to see Thor, along with other warriors named Fandral, Volstagg, and Sif, enter the final battle in the war to attain peace within the nine realms. The Asgardians learn that the Convergence, a rare change of structure in the nine realms, is about to occur.
Meanwhile in London on Earth, Dr. Jane Foster travels to an abandoned factory to study the Convergence. This leads Foster to travel through an unknown portal to another world where she becomes affected by the Aether. After alerting Thor of Foster’s condition, she is taken to Asgard meanwhile, Malekith, a Dark Elf awakened by the power of the Aether, plans an attack on Asgard.
Thor’s mother, Frigga, dies protecting Foster from Malekith, forcing him to escape with his accomplice Algrim without Foster. On the other end, Thor frees Loki as both brothers team up against Malekith and Algrim. Thor attempts to destroy the exposed Aether but fails which consequently results in Malekith merging with it.
Loki is fatally injured in his battle against Algrim but manages to kill him. It is revealed that Malekith plans to restore his army of Dark Elves and attain dominance by unleashing the Aether at the Convergence in Greenwich.
An intense battle takes place between Thor and Malekith where Thor manages to transport Malekith to Svartalfheim, where he is crushed and crumbled between his own tattered ship. The film ends with Odin revealing to be Loki in disguise who seems to be well alive.
With Thor: Dark World, Marvel has continued to maintain its recognized standards. The film’s visual effects were mainly handled by Double Negative and Blur Studio. According to Blur Studio officials, the animators approached the prologue with a 3D perspective.
Adding further, the officials explained how there were basically 80 cameras that were pointing at the environment and that environment became the 3D basis upon which further progress could be made with minimal effort. Double Negative produced digital models of Asgardian and Dark Elf fighters which were then handed over to Blur Studio to insert the CG element within them. Alan Taylor along with the two animation companies planned on going mostly CG. This, in turn, would enable viewers to experience greater intensity particularly when a battle would occur.
The main score of the film was composed by Brian Tyler. The score also featured the Iranian singer and musician Azam Ali as a vocalist. The soundtrack was released on 28th October 2013.
Overall, Thor: The Dark World is an intense film full of action and battle scenes. The producers and director have coordinated very well by making a film which has both a strong narrative along with compelling graphics, making it a treat to watch.
