Ultramarine Magmell

Ultramarine Magmell is a Netflix Original anime series that debuted back in 2019. I had never heard of this before but decided to give it a try and I thought it was a fun watch. There are 13 episodes and each one is around 25 to 30 minutes long. It is a decent series, but from what I understand there will be no second season

The Movie Review

I came into Ultramarine Magmell completely ignorant. I would later learn that this is based on a popular Chinese comic book series. I cannot say how faithful it is to that series, but from what I have read, fans of it do seem quite happy with how it was reworked into this anime.

I think that the idea of the show is really good. A strange new continent just appears on Earth and this continent is home to all kinds of special plants and resources. As you would expect, people want to go there and get the riches that it has and find new plants and so on to make medicines from.

However, this new content also is home to some strange and very dangerous creatures and that is where our two main characters, Inya and Zero come in handy. Inya has some special powers, but what I liked about this was that he was not super overpowered and still had obstacles to overcome.

Zero is like an android and she and Inya have a very interesting relationship, that I wish the show went deeper on. Speaking of which, Inya has some kind of story with his “master” and that is another thing that I wish the did more with. To be fair, if the show got a second season, I am sure stuff like this would have been addressed.

So what exactly do Inya and Zero do? Inya is a rescuer and people who want to head into this new continent will pay him to help save them or lead them on some kind of expedition. Most people who come here, no matter if it is for research or to try and get some of the resources or riches end up in trouble.

Most of the show feels like the episodes are just contained little stories, before falling into a main arc towards the end. I felt that the first episode was fantastic, it had action, humor, and even a bit of mystery about it. The show is decent, but I felt like it never really got any better than the first episode.

The animation here is great, there is a lot of stuff going on and the action scenes are incredible and some of them are pretty brutal actually. I think as a spectacle, this new continent of Magmell allowed them to pretty much create what they want, again I cannot say how close this is to the comic book, but I liked it. I also liked the English voice acting and felt that the cast did a great job.

Netflix has some awesome original anime series and while I would not say that Ultramarine Magmell is in contention to be regarded as the best, it was still a fun time and I am glad I watched it. To be fair, I think if the show had gotten another season, things would have been fleshed out more than they were.
