Van Helsing

It’s hard to talk about Van Helsing without diving deep into the mythology of this legendary character. Known to be a fierce and powerful monster hunter, this fictional character has been deeply rooted as a part of Dracula’s lore. However, he is by far the only fictional character in the horror genre who has never received a good adaptation.

The 2004 release, Van Helsing is just another in a series of films about this character which were truly awful.

The Movie Review

Van Helsing is a supernatural action-adventure movie that follows the legendary monster hunter, Gabriel Van Helsing, as he is sent to Transylvania to defeat the evil Count Dracula and his army of monsters, who has formed an unlikely alliance with Frankenstein’s Monster.

Along the way, he teams up with Anna Valerious, a princess seeking revenge against Dracula, and together they must overcome the formidable obstacles and creatures that stand in their way. As they get closer to their target, they uncover dark secrets that threaten to unravel their mission and change the course of their lives forever.

It is a mishmash of different horror legends such as vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein’s monster, which could have been a great concept if executed properly. However, the pacing is so haphazard and inconsistent that it is difficult to keep up with what is happening on screen.

The storyline jumps from one scene to the next without properly developing any of them. The lack of focus in the story leads to a lack of emotional investment in the characters. The script is littered with cliches and cheesy one-liners that fail to inspire any emotional response from the audience.

The dialogue is unremarkable and unmemorable, with characters saying lines that feel like they were written by someone who had never heard human speech before.

The Characters

Despite having some notable actors, the cast and acting performances in Van Helsing are mediocre at best. Hugh Jackman as the titular character Van Helsing lacks charisma, which is a rare sighting, to say the least. His performance feels forced and unconvincing.

Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious gives a flat performance and fails to bring any depth to her character, which is also a rare sight in Hollywood. These two actors are the kind of people who ensure that THEY are the best part of a film, and yet here they fail tremendously.

The supporting cast is equally unimpressive, with none of them standing out in their roles.

The Visuals

The visuals and cinematography in Van Helsing are impressive in parts, but ultimately, they fail to make up for the movie’s other shortcomings. The gothic scenery and the costumes are well-designed and add to the movie’s atmosphere. However, the excessive use of CGI effects takes away from the movie’s credibility and feels overdone.

The action and stunt choreography in Van Helsing are thankfully some much-needed redeeming qualities of the film. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and visually impressive. Though overdone, the CGI effects are at least well done and add a level of spectacle to the movie.

The Music

The music for Van Helsing was composed by Alan Silvestri, a veteran composer who has worked on numerous high-profile movies. Despite his impressive resume, the soundtrack for Van Helsing was unremarkable.

The score lacked any defining themes that would make it memorable and it also failed to bring any depth to the emotional moments in the movie. Instead, it felt like a generic attempt to create an action movie score, relying heavily on fast-paced, bombastic music that failed to capture the mood or tone of the movie.

It’s obvious that Silvestri’s creative process was heavily hindered by studio interference here.

Verdict

I truly believe that Van Helsing had some admirable qualities, such as its stunning visuals and impressive set pieces, and a solid cast of talented actors. It had the potential to be a fantastic franchise of fantastical stories and creatures, and yet that potential was wasted through poor execution.

Its poorly written script and generic action scenes overshadowed any positives. The music and soundtrack failed to add any depth or emotion to the movie, feeling like a forgettable attempt at creating an action movie score.

Ultimately, Van Helsing fails to leave a lasting impression, like a beautifully decorated cake with a lackluster flavor and dry texture.
