I remember watching What Women Want on a flight back in 2001 and I have seen it a couple of times since then and always thought that it was fun. What Men Want is a movie that I am surprised took the better part of two decades to make! With What Women Want being a decent hit, you would have thought that this was a no-brainer.

The Movie Review
I came into this pretty positive. As I said, I enjoyed What Women Want and the idea that this is a remake, but with a gender swap I thought was kind of cool. Plus, I am a fan of Tracy Morgan and Taraji P Henderson and with Henderson taking the lead role, I thought that this had the potential to be a lot of fun.
Predictability and Forgettable Moments
While I certainly would not say that What Men Want is a bad movie at all, it is also a very predictable and kind of forgettable movie if I am being brutally honest. Taraji P Henderson plays the role of Ali, Ali is a sports agent trying to make her mark in a business that is traditionally ruled by men.
Character Dynamics
The people that Ali works with at the sports agency for the most part are unbearable! Apart from Brandon who is a very likable character, Ali works with a bunch of alpha dude bros that are not likable in the slightest. Even though Ali is good at her job, you can tell that as she is a woman, she is kind of overlooked.
Plot Twists
Her career and standing in the company could all change if she can land NBA prospect, Jamal Barry! Ali has a hard time getting on with Jamal’s dad, Dollah who is played by Tracy Morgan. Dollah is not keen on Ali as she lacks a family dynamic, but she hooks up with a dude called Will who happens to have a son and she kind of uses them to try and trick Dollah into thinking that she has a family.
The “Twist”
The “twist” of What Men Want is that at a party, Ali is given a special drink by a weird and mystical character called Sister and this after she is knocked out, causes her to be able to hear the thoughts of men, just like Mel Gibson in What Women Want, but he was able to hear the thoughts of women. It is a fun premise and it plays out pretty much the exact way that you would expect it to.
Comedy and Memorable Characters
What Men Want is a comedy, but much of the “comedy” comes off as really awkward, which is odd as it has some funny people in it. I have to say the character that steals the show is Sister who is played by music superstar Erykah Badu. She was legit funny and by far the most memorable aspect of this movie.
Final Verdict
I do have to say that this is not a bad movie at all, it is just a very forgettable one. If you are looking for something light and fun to watch during a date night as you snuggle on the couch with a bunch of snacks, you can do way worse than this. However, I do not see a time where I would ever pick watching this over What Women Want.
