Not only was this a hit at the box office, but this romantic comedy was also popular with the stuffy movie critics of the day too.
Feel-Good Romance with a Twist
Like most other romantic comedies, While You Were Sleeping is about as predictable as you can get, but that does not matter. This is the kind of movie that makes you smile after a long day at work, or is perfect if you are feeling a little down and need cheering up. Lucy is one of the most likable characters that Sandra Bullock has ever played, and Bill Pullman’s Jack is also very likable.
While You Were Sleeping Plot Summary
The plot of the movie is that we have Lucy, who works at the token booth at a train station in Chicago, and each day, a cute guy called Peter buys a token from her. Lucy is in love with Peter, or actually, she is more in love with the idea of Peter and what she thinks their life would be like if they were together. The fact of the matter is, Peter has no idea who she is and is just polite to her when he gets his train token.
Well, one day, Peter is getting mugged and he ends up pushed onto the train tracks and Lucy saves his life, taking him to the hospital. Peter is in a coma, and due to a misunderstanding, the people at the hospital and Peter’s family think that Lucy is his fiancée! In all of the chaos that is going down, Lucy ends up not telling people the truth and goes along with it, and she soon falls in love with Peter’s family.
Unexpected Romance Between Lucy and Jack
Now the twist of While You Were Sleeping is that Peter has a younger brother called Jack, and Jack and Lucy start to get really close and clearly start to develop romantic feelings with each other. Things are complicated by the fact that Jack is dealing with a complicated relationship, and it turns out that Peter already had a fiancée!
That is pretty much all you need to know about the plot. The wedding scene at the end is ridiculous, but it is so much fun the way it all plays out. The scenes with Lucy and Jack growing closer, and also the scenes with Lucy being accepted into the family, are very well done.
Why While You Were Sleeping Is Still a Fan Favorite
Ok, so this is a spoiler, but I refuse to believe that there is anyone who watches the first act of the movie or even watches the trailer that does not know that Jack and Lucy end up together at the end. The thing is, this is what you want! The movie may be predictable, but it is so predictable that it leaves you with a huge smile on your face. It is just a very well done, feel good kind of movie, and a movie that I have seen several times over the years, and it has never failed to entertain me or cheer me up. If you want a fun romantic comedy from the 90s, this is tough to beat.
