The Song Review

Burn by Ellie Goulding – What is the Meaning of the Lyrics?

When the song begins, the audience welcomes her onto the stage. They have been waiting to see her anxiously on the concert, show, or set, and the moment is initially here.

The lyric “Cause we got the fire, and we’re burning one hell of something” is the focal point of the song. The singer, Ellie Goulding, emphasizes there is a bright light inside of us, beaming with positivity and hope. It is so bright it will outshine any dark moment and overcome life challenges.

Goulding wishes for the singer to live freely without any fears. She insists we stop caring about what other people have to say and focus on our interests and concerns. Goulding is absolutely against different toxic energies dimming the light that shines from within.

The interpretation is further explained by the co-writer Ryan Tedder. In his perspective, the song represents the challenges during a civil rights or gender quality that has been an endless struggle thus far.

The singer uses fire to denote love when she sings, “We fight the fire, then we burn it up.” She emphasizes that our passions and interests motivate us to live and reach the finish line. “We got the love, there’s no sleeping now,” is precisely what it means. The listener must practice patience and resilience until their dreams come true.

The lyrics continue to mention the fire within us, love, and life. “We’ll be raising our hands” and enjoying the youth because we only get to live once. We sometimes forget this harsh reality when we wait for things to improve. However, in actuality, we must persevere and look for opportunities befitting our interests.

In a gist, the song is about waking up consciously and physically acting to change how things are done. It is time we introduce inclusivity, love, and light into the darkened corners. We cannot let capitalism and monetary motive let the human race crumble. Remember, readers, we are more than humans. We are incredible beings who have the intellectual prowess to change things for the better.

Burn by Ellie Goulding – the Video

A lonely individual walks through a wheat field at sunset. The frame switches to Goulding singing with rebel hands hanging out from a caravan. It appears there is an uprising on the way. There are shots of people running, climbing fences, and collectively moving toward a common destination.

Goulding performs the lyrics, standing in the middle of the road. She is dressed in a black cardigan, shorts, tank top, and shoes. As the story progresses, the rebels stop in the field and take out orbs from their backpack. These round glass orbs emit light when placed on the ground. The setting shifts to nighttime as Gould walks and performs the songs among them.

She is surrounded by rebels, dancing and looking up at the sky. It is pretty evident that the orbs indicate someone to arrive and save the human race from themselves. It appears they are waiting for someone, perhaps a change in leadership?

Where is Your Shine?

After learning about the song’s meaning, what is your response? We admit the setting and lyrics are a bit eerie. Though the ideology behind the music is appreciative, maybe it could’ve been delivered without signaling an instigation. Regardless of our two scents, we agree with the artist that the motivation to do better is internal.
