Justin Bieber – Sorry

An apology anthem can be a great way to announce a fresh start. That is what the famous 2015 song “Sorry” by J. Beebs, aka Justin Bieber was all about. Justin Bieber’s Sorry was the second single from the album “Purpose” 2015. This song was a subtle expression of getting back on track. It was also a driving force for the whole album, as it was named “Purpose”.

It came after troubling times for Bieber, i.e. distractions, public vitriol, and arrest in 2014. However, it was a not-so-subtle nod to her ex through an apology. Yes, we are talking about Selena Gomez. Well, whatever it be, the song topped charts in over 15 countries. Currently, it has over 3 billion views on YouTube. For sure, we can say it was an undeniable banger.  It was released on October 22, 2015.

Mature Bieber, People!

There is no doubt that Justin Bieber is a self-made man. He has come a long way. From a guitar-playing Canadian teen on the street all the way to selling over 150 million albums globally in 2019, Justin has done it all. He won hearts across the world. With this song, his fans welcomed a new Bieber. It was a reinvention. In essence, it was regaining one’s purpose in life.

Justin himself said, “This is mature Bieber, people!” in his interview with GQ. He added, “For a while, I felt like I have lost my purpose, now I feel like I am actually regaining it back”. Plus, “There is always room for growth”. The Bieber’s fan base was over the top, seeing this reemission.

Let’s Talk about the Video

Now, let us talk about the music video of “Sorry”. The song’s video is a wonderful amalgamation of chic dancing and the sorry anthem. It is kinetic with a playful sing-along style. In addition, it is precise yet a bit goofy. In a word, it was balanced perfectly.

The video features a dancing group from New Zealand, the ReQuest Dance Crew, along with the Royal Family Dance Crew. It was a flashy and all-girls hip hop that came out as a jaw-dropping performance. All of them dressed in cheerful colors. The very same all-girls ReQuest Dance Crew has been the World Hip Hop Champions.

It was perfectly directed and choreographed by a New Zealander, Parris Goebel. Goebel is also seen in the video dancing on the “Sorry” beat. To date, the music video has garnered over 3.4 billion views on YT. In fact, it is the 10th most viewed video on the video streaming service.

Getting Into the Music & Lyrics

Sorry’s music was something that still leaves many grooving to its beat. It is catchy, blissful, and, most importantly, tuneful. The song’s music is perfectly composed with a fast yet moderate tempo, with 100 beats per minute.

Plus, if we talk about its music genre, we can sense three of them in Justin Bieber’s Sorry. It is a kind of tropical house, moombahton, and dance hall pop music. Smoothly, an electrifying beat of EDM runs well in the song. This is an ethereal music recipe. On top of that, Justin’s voice ideally complemented the music.

Julia Michaels, Blood Pop, Justin Tranter, and Skrillex wrote the song. If we get into the essence of its lyrics, the song is a subtle or not-so-subtle apology plea to an unknown lover. As most people guessed, it was Selena Gomez. However, the lyrics of the song received mixed reviews. Some quoted them as “sincere”, others “unapologetic”. One of the lyricists, Julia Michaels, said that we just tried to capture a moment of realization in relationships. Such are moments when we realize the mistake and are ready to say sorry and admit it.

Well, you can listen to the song and see what you get out of it.
