Katy Perry – Roar: the Lyrics
According to Perry herself, the song gives a message to its listeners as to how they should learn to stand up for themselves. The background tune is mainly of the pop genre with the lyrics being motivational and empowering.
The lyrics begin with Perry initially describing the problems she used to face and how she felt powerless in taking them head-on. She describes the feeling of anxiety and the bullying of others who constantly held her down until she finally realized that she needs to stand up and have her voice heard.
The main chorus is where the inspiration kicks in as Perry sings how she rose up from the ground and finally understood what she needed to do. The song cleverly uses the concept of onomatopoeia as Perry compares her bravery and skills of those to a tiger and lion.
This feeling helps her regenerate the confidence within herself as she sings “Now I’m floating like a butterfly, stinging like a bee I earned my stripes, I went from zero to my own hero“.
The song makes a repetition in the latter half in terms of both the pattern and tune. The coherence of the song is maintained until the end when Perry pours in a solid chorus ending.
The Video
The official music video for the song begins with Perry visiting a jungle dressed up as an adventurer. Initially, she seems nervous and anxious particularly because the jungle is full of all sorts of threats and danger.
On top of that, her fellow hunter, who also holds a gun, gets eaten by a tiger which makes it even more terrifying. Eventually, the video displays how Perry begins to overcome her fears as she begins to adapt to her surroundings.
In the latter part of the song, Perry can be seen completely transformed into a new person as she can be seen interacting with different animals and showing off her physical strength.
Additionally, the sequence also focuses on the same tiger that was seen earlier, as Perry comes face to face with it. Through her courage and bravery, she manages to tame the tiger, along with the rest of the jungle animals.
The Bottom Line
Overall, Roar is an enthusiastic song that encourages all its listeners to take up the challenges of life head-on.
