The Game Review
The story in Crackdown 3 is mostly forgettable, but it does a good job setting the stage for the mayhem. You’re an elite agent in the Agency, an organization responsible for keeping the streets of New Providence clean. In order to take down TerraNova, you must first dismantle the three main branches of the organization.
These three branches are represented by various outposts and locations on the map, so you’ll have to travel there and eliminate any threat you find. Along the way, you’ll want to cause as much havoc as you can, weakening the strength of TerraNova. Most of the characters aren’t very memorable, but the game doesn’t spend too much time on the story. Cutscenes have a neat comic book style to them, and you’ll never feel like you’re missing out on the action.
Luckily, the action in Crackdown 3 is tons of fun. The open map of TerraNova is split into several regions, and each one has a slew of collectibles, races, and locations to complete. Enemies can be dispatched by using a range of weapons, including rocket launchers, grenades, pistols, and even some experimental guns.
Your agent is a powerhouse too; able to leap over buildings and punch cars into the air. As you progress through the game, your agent will grow stronger and more agile, allowing you to traverse the map in huge leaps. It’s a great feeling of growing strength and progression, and something that Crackdown 3 nails. No matter how you’re playing, you’ll always be gaining experience and growing more powerful.
In addition to the lengthy campaign mode, players can also hop into the multiplayer side of things. In Crackdown 3’s multiplayer “Wrecking Zone”, the environments are fully destructible, thanks to the power of Microsoft’s Azure cloud processing. You can play either Agent Hunter or Territories mode, one is all about getting kills and the other about capturing locations. Matches are quick and fun, and gameplay is exceptionally fast.
Players shoot around maps using boost pads, and you can dash and multi-jump several times while locking onto enemy players. Unfortunately, the multiplayer lacks any ranked play, leaderboards, or party system. So while the multiplayer is fun, there isn’t much to keep you interested.
Overall, Crackdown 3 is a wild and outrageous open world experience. It doesn’t do anything new for the Crackdown franchise, but that’s okay. If you’re a fan of the original Xbox 360 games, you’ll definitely enjoy Crackdown 3. It feels a bit dated by most modern standards, but I still had a great time saving the city of New Providence.
