Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

Wow, I am pretty sure you have heard by now how the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a massive disappointment. I thought “it surely cannot be that bad?” and purchased the Xbox version of the game. All, I can say is that if anything some reviewers have actually been way too kind to this phenomenal cash grab!

The Game Review

Ok, so having a collection of the first three 3D GTA games is a great idea. I still think that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is one of the best games on the PlayStation 2! So, I was very excited when this collection was announced as truth be told.

The first thing to talk about are the remastered graphics that the game has. These to be honest are not as bad as some people make out. This is the best (not counting mods) that these three games have ever looked at. Yes, some character models look better than ever, but without fully remaking the games, this is probably as good as they can look.

With that being said, there are so many weird graphical glitches in this game that it is kind of insane they had the nerve to release it. The most notable one I have had happen is just falling through the floor of the world! This has happened way more times than you would think!

I have also seen NPCs walking through objects and disappearing too. The amount of weird stuff that goes on is just crazy. The game has a ton of technical bugs going on, I have been kicked back to the dashboard so many times that I have lost interest and just said screw it.

One major bummer and this one to be fair I get as it is to do with licensing is the soundtrack. Do not get me wrong, Vice City and San Andreas still have plenty of music. However, they lost the license to several tracks in both games and that is a real shame, especially as this is called The Definitive Edition!

One thing that I do feel they improved here is the shooting mechanics. Have you tried to play one of those older GTA games recently? The shooting mechanics used to be so awkward, but here they are kind of a middle ground between GTA V and the older games. It actually works pretty well and if the rest of the game ran properly, it would be something I am sure more people would be praising them for.

I am so disappointed with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. How they can call this The Definitive Edition is beyond me. They would have been better just taking the PS2/Original Xbox games and, slapping them on a disc as-is and calling it the collection without having Definitive Edition as part of the title. This has to be regarded as one of the worst releases of 2022.
