The Game Review
Marvel’s Spider-Man is the first licensed game developed by Insomniac Games. So far, it is only available to play in a single-player mode where the players follow the main storyline and get to play as Spider-Man himself. Although the storyline does not exactly follow the comic books directly, it still features a similar environment set in the city of New York.
Played from a third-person perspective, Spider-Man offers one of the best gameplay experiences that the world of gaming has seen in a while. It enables a very extensive combat system that the players make full use of while defeating their enemies.
Apart from physical attacks, players can attack and even restrict their enemies using web attacks. Special abilities such as aerial attacks, spider sense, and finishing moves can also be performed using a combination of different attacks. Apart from the combat system, gameplay elements such as web-swinging, web-crawling, and the use of gadgets add to the whole exhilarating experience.
Coming over to the storyline, Spider-Man is a completely open-world based game where players have the option to roam around freely or pursue the quests that appear on the main map. The main quests follow the progress made in the storyline. However, the game also offers side quests that can be completed in order to earn experience points and unlock special items such as suits and gadgets. The experience points can be used by the players to improve current skill levels as well as in unlocking additional ones such as attack combos and new web-slinging abilities. By unlocking new abilities, players can take down their opponents more easily.
As for the types of enemies in the game, Spider-Man features two types of adversaries.
The first ones are ordinary criminals and bad guys that can quite easily be defeated using only the basics.
The second type consists of boss enemies that the players encounter as they progress in the storyline. Some of these boss enemies include Shocker, Vulture, and Wilson Fisk Kingpin. Each of these bosses is equipped with a special ability that the players are required to tackle in order to defeat them.
