Red Dead Redemption 2

Probably one of the most anticipated titles since Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto V back in 2013, the downloadable Red Dead Redemption 2 is a western game with an open-world premise and buckets of violence to boot. Think Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful 8 when it comes to imagining the environment Rockstar has created for gamers in this epic title.

The Game Review

Brimming with violence and rugged personalities, Red Dead Redemption 2 has the developers trademark attention to quality and sports finely honed gameplay to match its ambitions as an open-world bonanza.

It would not be fair to describe Red Dead Redemption 2 as Grand Theft Auto but in the Wild West although the temptation to do so is quite real. What it takes from GTA it uses in its own unique way and the mayhem and off-the-wall chaos found in the GTA series is still here but somewhat more subdued given the premise of the title.

A prequel to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption, itself a classic among video games, this action title will be much more narratively focused than the most recent GTA incarnation, giving the game something to offers gamers who enjoy the expertly crafted dialogue and narratives so common to many of Rockstar’s titles.

If you’re looking for a world to immerse yourself in and become a part of in the process then this game has you covered.

The game does still have some theme park elements that make the world very cool to look at but sometimes frustrating to explore.

Often some things are just window dressing and this game has a lot of it. Played from either a first-person or third-person perspective, Red Dead Redemption 2 borrows most of what made the first game great while turning everything up to 11 in terms of graphics, depth, things to do, and a world to explore.

Carrying over from the first title is the Honor system which determines how certain non-player characters interact with you.

As the name implies, the Honor system calculates some kind of morality score that probably determines your character’s alignment in the in-game world.

Rockstar often shies away from labeling anything good or evil so you can expect there will be a lot of gray gradient in this scale. What it does ensure is that a player can customize the gameplay experience through each playthrough by simply interacting with NPCs in a different way.

Taking place in 1899 as the era of the Wild, Wild West was coming to a close, the tale told in here underpins enough of the game that follows it to stand alone as its own title. This means players need not have played the first game to enjoy the second title.

The deceptively small scale of the narrative introduced at the beginning unfolds into a sprawling epic that can be called nothing less than a masterpiece.

A barely used genre and one that is even more rarely executed this well, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a generation-defining game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One just as Grand Theft Auto V was for the previous generation of home consoles.
