If there is one thing that gamers love, it is nostalgia. And this is often manifested in the video gaming industry as remakes and re-releases. After all, if it was good the first time, it’s probably going to be great the second time around, right? That’s probably a lot of the thinking that went behind Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a downloadable collection of the Spyro the Dragon games released on the PlayStation back in the 1990s.

The Game Review
Coming out just when 3D platforming was starting to take off, Spyro the Dragon is beloved by legions of PSX owners who also fondly recall Crash Bandicoot, among others. You see, finding an experience like Super Mario 64 was pretty difficult and Sega wouldn’t respond with their own 3D mascot game until the Dreamcast.
This put games like Spyro the Dragon in the spotlight and they took their position deadly seriously. As a result, the series built a sizable fanbase that is just as dedicated today.
Developed by Toys for Bob and released by Activision, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a collection of the first three games with updates to graphics and sound as well as small tweaks to gameplay here and there.
Building upon the basic framework of the Spyro games that came out in the for the PSX, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remasters just about everything and offers detailed, cartoon-like enemies that pop with life. Nothing looks generic and everything largely fits in with the Spyro aesthetic. Often remastered games do as little as possible, but Toys for Bob lovingly recreated the old models using updated designs.
This remodeling extends to the stage graphics as well as those for Spyro himself. They’re bright, crisp, and clear but probably nothing to write home about.
Where the game does excel is in its fan service. Toys for Bob brought back the voice actor from the first game and had him re-record the lines from the second game so that the three titles would be presented with that coherence running through them, much to the delight of fans. Further, there is the option to choose from the original or a remastered soundtrack.
The platforming gameplay of the original is totally intact and even better than some remember it. There are no real differences between this and the original series of games except for the improved graphics, music, and sound.
