Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

I swear that we live in a golden age for game reboots. The New Order (2014) was a great way to reboot the Wolfenstein franchise and this sequel from 2017 takes it to a new level. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a very well made and highly polished first-person shooter. I will say that you need to play The New Order first to really get the best out of this.

In talking about the story, I want to be very, very careful about what I say. This is a direct sequel to The New Order and once again we play as the one-man army that is BJ. The game is set in the 60s in an alternate history where the Nazis won the war. BJ is trying to stop them from truly taking over the USA forever.

There is more to the story than just that, but for what at first seems like a “meathead” action movie kind of plot. You will be amazed at how much character growth there is here and some of the twists and turns legit blew my mind. My advice is you read as little about the story as possible and make sure you finish The New Order first.

The Game Review

The presentation of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is high-class all the way. Bethesda always makes interesting game worlds and this one is no different. There are many little details in each area that you are in and many times you will feel like you are playing a part in a Hollywood movie.

In terms of the gameplay, I will say that they already had a very solid foundation with The New Order. I would not call, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus a massive step forward in terms of the gameplay. That may sound like a negative, but it is actually a positive. They already had a very solid first-person shooter engine on their hands so I am glad they did not change things for the sake of it.

The game gives you plenty of weapons to wage war against the Nazi’s with. What I liked was how many of the weapons could be dual-wielded. The gunplay on offer here is some of the most satisfying and fun I have come across in a first-person shooter in quite some time. It is hard to explain, but after just an hour or so of playing you will know exactly what I am talking about.

I was surprised at how challenging the game was. I am not saying the previous game was a walk in the park. However, I found myself dying quite frequently in this one, especially before I had got a few upgrades. The game is fun, but despite it being a loud and shoot first kind of game. You still have to think about what you are doing or else the smart AI will blow you away.

I think that they hit a home run with the Wolfenstein reboot. What we have here in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a tremendous follow up that is well worth your time. If you enjoy fun FPS games, you are going to have a ton of fun with this. Just make sure you play through The New Order first and stay away from spoilers about the story!
