The Game Review

As with many other racing games, and even similarly with the Asphalt series, in Asphalt 8: Airborne there is no resemblance of a story with this game. At no point, the player is given any reason for doing what they’re doing, but as with most racing games, the reason to keep playing is to beat their opponents and proceed to use that success to upgrade any and all of their favorite vehicles.

Gameplay should come as no surprise considering the game’s genre, but the main idea for each race is to get to the end in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Depending on which placement the player manages to get, they will get 3 stars in 1st place, 2 in 2nd place, and 1 in 3rd place. Each campaign race has five different starts, with secondary objectives for the player to accomplish. They can accomplish these running down other racers in a term known as a “knockout”, where they temporarily become incapacitated before they can start to race again. On top of knockouts, the player can acquire another star by taking some of the epic jumps that are spread out around the majority of most race tracks, allowing for a new level of verticality the previous games did not have.

Other than just the racing, however, a big part of any racing game is the inclusion of upgrades for each vehicle, of which there are over 200 different vehicles to choose from. Upgrades can be made by making purchases with in-game currency, which can be earned by playing and succeeding in any of the races the player takes part in. The higher the difficulty for the race, the increased amount of cash the player can then proceed to spend on all of their favorite cars or bikes.

In terms of comparisons, Asphalt 8: Airborne, in fact, takes a lot of experience from all of the previous Asphalt games. The developers took a lot of what they learned from the previous games in the series and implemented them into Airborne to make it the pinnacle of racing titles on mobile platforms.

Aesthetically, the game makes use of strong HDR visuals and as such creates an incredible looking game that still holds up incredibly well nearly 5 years into its development. Even now, the game is set to receive another content update that makes it bigger and better than it was the previous month.

For anyone that’s on the lookout for a racing game that’s simple and gets to the point instantly, all the while giving players more than enough to do as they wait for the next event to start up.
